    It Was....

The Black/white wire within the trunking in the engine bay.

10/10 UKAT! Thanks for the help. the wiring diagram and other sugestions were most helpful. This is very much the sort of fault where the prior experiance of others is particularly helpful in pointing one in the right direction.

    However..

    VAG-Nill Points!!!

Judging by the condition of the wires in the loom My guess is that the black/white wire was not so much broken as cut!

The Black/white wire is, along with several others in the bundle, about the thickness of a human hair. many of the wires had the insulation cut down to the copper by abrasion with the hard plastic ridging on the inside of the "Protective" trunking. No doubt this had actually severed the wire in question (though I didnt find the break. I just bypassed it)

This loom is in such poor condition that I warned the owner that I could not guarrentee that a similar (or worse-ie Fire) breakdown may not occur and that a relacement loom is strongly reccomended

This is a design fault, and a potentially serious one at that. The combination of thin wires, hard ridged "protective" ducting and a route that takes the loom From the bulkhead, "Accross" the top of the engine and then back onto the inner wing could not have exposed the delecate wiring to more vibration if it had been a specific part of the design criteria.

I immagine we are going to start seeing a lot of these!

    Shame on you VW!

I am often asked why I dont replace my 20+ year old VW Transporter. This is a good example of why. I dont want to have to deal with this kind of nonsense!
