Hi, The manual reset seems not to work.

I also only have one key (Alternative reset procedures seem to need at least two keys)

But the main issue to my mind is that I do not seem to be able to make any VAG-COM communication with the remote locking ecu.

This is why I am thinking that this is the issue rather than the key fob.

Autodata is unclear as to where the ECU actually is and how one might access it.

I "Think" it is behind the fuse box, but it looks awkward to get to and I would like somebody to confirm this before I go to the effort of dismantling the dashboard.
