Here is the map I remember hanging on the wall of the ER in the hospital in 1973-74, courtesy of the Air Force Historical site, the second image.

Now, I wonder.. does the Master Plan mean that it was the very first map.. or is this the Master Plan of a particular year...

and he responded to all and sent me 2 maps.. 66 and a 69.... but neither look like this one...

I can send you the jpg version, which would lose pixels in blow up if you want a wall map, otherwise contact Barry Spink at the Air Force Historical Research Agency to get a pdf version that you can blow up and not lose quality.

The map is dated 1966 and noted "Master Plan" I believe this is what Takhli probably became later.
In 1966, most of this map did not exist! The flight line and the housing around Building 100. The upper section (blow up) on some NCO hooches and only 2 airman's barracks existed in December of 1966 when I left. Yes, others were being built but most of this was just a plan. The POL area was just bladders along the main road! Munitions was much smaller and revetments on the flight line. Just planes wing tip to wing tip ready to go.

Roland, I may be totally incorrect, but my guess the map posted here is about all there is. Building 600, was a old building that was repurposed. As was the Airman's Club, NCO Club and other buildings in that area. There were some older NCO hooches that I venture to guess is where you might have been. They were near the left side (and lower area) of the map that is posted here. Hope that helps. LouB.

I'm sending this back to the top of the forum. The map here is as good as you are going to get, The first is a blow up of the new section of the base that was started in mid to late 1966. The main map is a "full build out" map dated 1966 of what was planned for Takhli. I left the base in December 1966 so I have no idea what the final build looked like. Satellite photos seem to bear out the full build out map. LouB.

Geez guys. IMHO if you spent anytime in the hootchs at Tahkli you were probably exposed. Simply being assigned to any of the RTAFB's should be at least probable cause. I tried to point out the wire was right there next to were many us lived and slept. Working in sprayed areas was probably the coup de gras for many. I have not seen anyone exploring what was in the water we drank or the food we ate on and off base. I also haven't seen the Thai Gov't involvement with AO exposure. One good attorney hooked up to reputable toxicologist could do wonders for VA stubbornness

I have looked everywhere for a map of the 73-74 time frame to use in my VA claim. I need to show the perimeters where we worked on the end of runway and engine trim pad. I was aircraft maintenance. Could anybody that has a usable map email it to me at djkeenan@cox.net?

I remember walking numerous times between the hutches and the razor wire on hitch patrol. The wire was next to my hutch then the large grass area and I believe the Thai air base. There is no records of doing hitch patrol so my AO claim keeps getting denied. There is also a record of AO that has a 20 year life. So if we were there then we were exposed. I received of info from the VA, American Legion/VFW magazines.

Colleen, There is no pre - 1967 map that I am aware of. The "Full Build out" map dated 1966 is the best. It depends if Barry was NCO or not. The old hooches were on the lower left side of this map near the munitions storage area. In late 1966 they had only two H-shaped barracks for enlisted located on the right side of the map. But more were in progress, which is probably what he was talking about. Some NCO hooches in lower right existed in late 1966, nothing else existed in that area in late 1966 (late December), which is when I left Takhli. Perhaps someone can add more information to this, hope it helps. LouB.

Lou, please review this map. I took the Takhli Master Plan and matched it with the 2016 Google Map. The perimeter is almost the same as the 1966 or 1968 Master Plan.
The outside red line is the old base perimeter. My only concern is the runway. The old master plan shows the perimeter just beyond the far side of the runway. Can you look at that for me. If that is correct, then most of the aircraft parking ramp is in the drift zone. That would mean a lot more people were exposed.
The inside red line is the 500 meter drift area as described in Army FM3-3, page 5-5.

This is not official.
The perimeter of Takhli RTAFB is basically the same in this Google Map as it was in the late 60s and early 70s. I used the Takhli Master Plan from the late 60s and outlined it with the 2016 Google Map of Takhli.
The outside red line is the base perimeter. The inside red line is the 500 meter drift area as described in Army FM3-3, page 5-5.

Larry, nice work! If I remember correctly the entire munitions area was clear, so it was sprayed too, that would put the drift area in the old hooch area. When I was actually there (1966), I did not realize the distances to things, it seemed further for some reason. You are correct almost everything on the other side of the runway was in Thai controlled area and not USAF. Everything on the other side of the runway was dead and brown. Look at the "Combined" Takhli Websites, especially the "Bangkok Bob" section and look at the pictures, Ben Shuppert has some nice aerial shots posted, the lack of vegetation is noticeable compared to the satellite photo you used to make your map. Others may have some different recollections, especially from different years at the base. LouB.

Arrived Takhli Jan 1967 weapons Tech # 3 man on load crew. 1 stripe. Left Takhli Jan 1968 3 stripes load crew chief. Promoted to Staff Sgt E-5 at McConnell AFB Kansas. Went from Horrible Hooch to Concrete Barracks at end of runway. Pictures show base changed alot after I left. Retired Telephone Company 1989 20 yrs.Retired Idaho State Police 2004 15 yrs service.Thanks for the great website.

Gerry, Thank You for your service, those were the good USAF years for making rank was far better than prior years. I was rare to see E-4 in a four year tour before 1965, very few E-5's in a four year tour in 1967, then pow!!!...they needed people and did what they could to keep them. Plus the Thud crews were rotating back to SEA a lot.
Yes, Takhli change a lot over the years, from 1961 to 1966, and after that the place exploded!!!

I was with 354th ait. Sqd from Aug. 66-Oct. 67. While there I had to pull augmental guard duty in ammo dump. to the best of my memory no airmen at Takhli then had weapons, just the Thai Mp's. None of my records reflect any of this info. Can anyone help me? While there I served under Col's Scott, White, Broughton,Geraudo, Gast and last was Col.Yeager. My primary job was the making of the mission briefing charts and maps along with my partner in crime, John Tomkowski. Thank You all, Jack Rase

If you look at the map dated 1966. on the top are numbers and on the side are letters. this allows you to grid areas. E&F 5 and part of 6 are the old hooch areas. Closer to the flight line is the pilots and just below are airman hooches. Part of E6 are the NCO and transit hooches. Grid F 8 is the new area and the smaller are the NCO hooches. H-shaped buildings are airman's dorms and pilot(?) dorms. These dorms were starting to be built in late 1966 when I was leaving Takhli. Hope this helps. LouB.

I'm also looking for a copy of the map from 1973, especially the perimter of the flight line. I did Casualty Reporting for the Personal Affairs Section at the CBPO from March 1973 to March 1974. I'm in another appeal with the VA for exposure to Herbicides during that time. My reporting took me to the perimeter several times and I'm now at that stage where I will be seeing a judge and this map would be vital to show all the areas I visited.

Looking for buddy letter to support my VA claim with AO. I lived in a twelve man hootch in airmen housing area and worked at the AGE shop in the FMS area. Besides doing Periodic inspections on the equipment and working the flight line, I traveled all over the base looking for the AGE equipment.. I was there from July 1969 to July 1970. I was an E4.

I don't think you'll find satellite imagery in detail of the base in that time period - maybe aerial photography. The sat imagery from that era wasn't zoomed in and detailed like Google Earth today. You might take some recent photos and superimpose info from the 68-69 era onto the photos. Here's an image posted in this group with some annotations:

You can use Google Earth to get recent views of the base but parts of the US side has gone back to jungle.

Roy Z, Dick Williams gave you the link to Larry Fisher's satellite image map he developed with a lot of work. I do not believe the base changes much from the full build out configuration dated 1966. There may have been an added building or two, or others not in use. I will admit right here I was there in 1966 and full build out was a ways from completion when I rotated back to CONUS. If you know the area where your barracks were you can figure out where you lived. The flight line, the trim pads and arming area didn't change (top of satellite image or left of the base map at end of the runway). LouB.

Hi, I was stationed at Takhli from Aug 1969 to Aug 1970. Assigned to 333 TFS. Does any one have a map of Takhli from that period that shows the base perimeter and cleared area's. I was there August 66 to July 67 as the base bug killer in CE Squadron. We sprayed all over the base and the perimeter. Does anyone remember any bug killers during that time.

I was in the 57mms out of Nellis AFB We Were TDY to Takhli I think September 1972. As I remember that's when the F-111 were sent there. I worked on air to air missiles. At first it was 6 days a week. Then the F-4s left. The 111's weren't carrying missiles so it was 2 days a week incase the phone rang. It seams like we had an alert that the enemy was near the base. We weren't allow guns so they sent guards to protect us. Any way when we were on nights I remember that truck would come around and spray DDT. The bugs all just dropped out of the sky.

Bob, I was at Thakli RTAFB in ‘73 for Linbacker II but I’m not writing about my tour in Thailand. I have a 50 year relationship with a Good friend named Robert J Robbins. I rarely come across the name of Robbins and seeing your name prompted this message. He was raised by his Aunt and Uncle named Buckley.
We’re you there during “Linbacker II”? I was with the 434th TFS out of George AFB, CA. I hope you find your map and get your compensation. I’m dealing with them too and it’s a battle. Shouldn’t be but it is. Good luck.

Ahoy Larry, We called those (3) PADS 'TRIM PADS'... They are at (NE) End near where TAXI-WAY Turns EAST to ARMING ZONE, then Turn (S)onto Runway. Two PADS are Rectangular & connect to TAXI-WAY, the other T-PAD is centered between the North PAD & South PAD, Marked by a longer lay of Concrete to a CIRCULAR PAD (Holding 1 A/Craft). What was your AFSC, Years @ TAKHLI ?

Interesting you did 'Bug Spray'.. Was that from a Tanker Truck, a Galvanized Spray Can ? How many Times per Week ? The common TIME of Day spraying done ? Have you ever become ILL Then, or Since associated with those Chemicals, and Any Idea what were Those Chemicals (by Name). What Color was Truck, How many Tanker Trucks, and Where on Base they were Parked (MAP).. Thank you, MC

I was a weapons loader from 69- 70. Ineed a buddy letter from anyone that can describe the arming area and where the weapons loaders worked . Thanks

I was at Takhli from August 1969 to August 1970. Assigned to 333 TFS as an aircraft crew chief.

Thanks for the encouragement. Viet Nam era veterans stationed in Thailand were exposed to tactical herbicides just as the veterans in Viet Nam. They just have a more difficult time in getting the VA and our government to admit it and do what is right.

There is legislation stalled in committee to recognize that veterans stationed in Thailand were exposed tactical herbicides. Write your congressman and senators to address the issue.

I was there August 66 to July 67 as the base bug killer in CE Squadron. We sprayed all over the base and the perimeter. Does anyone remember any bug killers during that time.
