And here is the rest of the story, as Paul Harvey used to say. After the line was abandoned, GTW ran its bicentennial locomotive from Lapeer to Columbiaville in August, 1976. I believe that was the last ever run of any equipment to go north of Lapeer. Millington to Lapeer track was removed. The state bought the track from Millington north. GTW bought the 1+ mile segment south of Lapeer to serve a few customers. LIRR runs that track now, although it has since been truncated to north of the out of service bridge. Track south of Lapeer to Utica was also removed. Metamora Products in Metamora protested the removal of this stretch of track, as they had invested a considerable sum of money into an unloading facility not long before the abandonment took place. Nothing came of their protest, however, and the track was removed.
