You must remember that back when, the Saginaw River was navigable up to the river junction at least. That meant all bridges up to there were movable. The current bridge at Genesee isn't the original bridge. In order to maintain a minimum channel clearance(25 feet here), the new bridge needed to gain some elevation over the land approach. Back when it was a movable bridge the tracks could and did cross Genesee along side Water Street. Having 25 feet of clearance is meaningless today. That's because the LSRC bridge is now a fixed position bridge with a channel clearance of 13 feet. |
