Back then I really liked how they were handling L&L during the first 10 months of 2001. L&L were being thrown back into each other's orbit in a really organic way. They were both dating other people, but kept finding themselves having to pair up. Then the Cassadine stuff was mounting and pushing them together. That material culminated one of my all time favorite L&L scenes, them in the cabin together when a drugged Luke is skipping across his history and thinks they're still together. It was subtle and well done.
Then, of course 9/11, and the whole Endgame story that had been building was ended really quickly because Helena's plan was basically to release a biotoxin on Port Charles as an act of terrorism. The whole Cassadine story collapsed, ended horribly, and the L&L reunion was rushed.
I really was disappointed in the speed, back then. It came too quickly. And it really felt like a series of disjointed romantic set ups designed to walk L&L back down memory lane. And even though I liked some of it a lot, I thought some of it was just really cheesy and not well done.
Now? Well we've worked our way through so much L&L material. We're now in late 1998, and Luke has walked out on Laura. The death of Lucky will be coming up soon in our viewing. Things are going to be really bleak, and I know my wife sees it coming.
I'm actually looking forward now to the 2001/2002 material. Not only will it be a welcome return to romantic L&L, and a welcome lighter shift away from the darkness of their break up years, I now have the gift of hindsight. I really never expected 2001/2002 to be the final years where we had Tony and Genie on the show, both on contract, full time together, and their characters romantically involved. They worked together A LOT in 01/02, and this time around I'm going to really cherish the gift of that time in away that I just couldn't appreciate as much back then.
