OTish: The Edwardians: Age of Elegance

Posted by Karen on September 14, 2026, 11:45 am

This morning I visited this Exhibition at the King's Galley, Holyrood Palace. It was stunning and I enjoyed seeing up close and in the flesh, so to speak, well known paintings and also some of Queen Alexandra's Faberge collection. The highlight for me was Queen Alexandra's Coronation gown.

All photos by me.

Queen Alexandra's Coronation gown. Obvously has faded over time, but can you imagine how it must of glittered and gleam of the gold fabric. The embroidery is exquisit.

Diamond, Pearl and Amethyst parure belonging to Queen Alexandra.

Famous painting by Danish painter Tuxen of Queen Victoria and her family. It was painted to mark her Golden Jubilee.

Faberge.

Faberge, Rock Crystal imitating stone being carried on a sledge. With sleeping worker on top of the stone. The sledge is made of gold.

And in the background of your first photo of Alexandra's coronation gown, Laszlo's famous portrait of Princess Alice of Greece.

Stunning all around!

Yes, the Laszio Portrait is wonderful. The delicate brush strokes are amazing. To actually see the portrait you have to stand back from it. If you go up close the details merge.

I guess since it was all ladies' dresses and such the partner portrait of Prince Andrew wasn't there. I think it would be so cool to see them side by side.

It was not all ladies dresses. The Coronation mantal of Edward VII was also on display. There were also paintings like the famous Tuxen painting of Queen Victoria and her family. The only clothing items on display were the Coronation ones.

You can take a virtual tour of the exhibition.

Edward and Alexandra became great leaders of fashion.
Surprising from this unlikely beginning.

It's not surprising at all. Edward was well-dressed and had an interest in clothing from teenager hood on.Alexandra was slender and beautiful. What she wore would be noted and copied. The couple is dressed fashionably in this photo. Edward's suit is slightly wrinkled because it was linen. Alexandra's suit and straw boater were very much the height of fashion . I think this photo was taken during the Cowes Regatta Edward loved yachting and Alexandra's dress has a nautical look.

My attempts at wry amusement go astray often.

Well I did think Edward's hat was a bit questionable...
