Is William looking for recruits after Harry, Andrew put slimmed-down monarchy at risk?

One statement in here I disagree with is that William was worried about the Sussexes becoming too popular. Popularity can wax and wane, but what matters here is The Firm. The problem was using popularity as a means for their own ends.

As far as Louise and James becoming working royals, they are each a blank slate. There are no scandals or poor decisions associated with them, nor are they associated with any causes. The public can project their ideals and hopes on them, but that's a heavy load for young shoulders.

The York princesses are, by every account, charming and well-mannered. They are poised in public and were close to the late queen and understand the importance of reflecting well on their family. But they have families of their own and having them take on even a few domestic appearances per month will quickly involve their parents. If not for Andrew and Fergie, their daughters along with their handsome husbands and adorable children could be the faces of dyslexia screening for children and life after spinal surgery. Also, reading to young children and encouraging literacy and an appreciation of the arts.

The Tindalls are very likable and might do more to encourage sports, exercise and health within families. But they also work to support their family and might not want to give up the level of privacy their family enjoys.

William, call me. We'll get this sorted.

I don't think James will do any public engagements. His parents and teachers have no doubt worked very hard with him, but he's not yet up to dealing much with the public. He was the only grandson who didn't walk behind the Queen's coffin and I don't think he would do well with royal duties.

Lady Louis would be a great candidate, but I think she wants a private life. Same with Beatrice and Eugenie.

Definitely all in or all out, otherwise the who-know-who would go postal.

And that is why, putting aside any other red flags that are waving in regard to his other cousins, Louise and her brother are the only candidates. The others would either not be willing to give up their money-making activities or the public would perceive them as continuing their money making activities.

James does seem very awkward and withdrawn in public, but there are photos of him laughing and looking very relaxed. Maybe he's coming out of a very awkward stage. I can't imagine having to be out in public with your parents wearing clothes that someone else picked out because they're appropriate and you really have no say. For a middle schooler that's the worst possible cringe imaginable.

James just turned 17 (hard to believe!). There are rumors he's on the autism spectrum, which I tend to think might be true. I'll be very happy to be wrong about that!

I was proud of James when he stood with the other grandchildren at the Queen's Lying-In-State. He had his sister next to him, performing royal duties would be different. It would be up to his parents and James himself as he ages, but mostly Edward and Sophie.
Louise also, it's going to be up to her if she wants to be a full time Royal. The whole situation seems to bother the media more than it does the public.

Yes, he was, but Louise was there with him. He didn't walk behind Philip's casket either. It may be his age, but he's also not attended things that the other grandchildren attended when they were as young as him. I think he finds some things very challenging that others find less difficult.

ai have to add that I'm not commenting on his intelligence. I think he is intelligent. His brain might just be wired a little differently.
