It was the "normal" the daughters were raised with so they may not have realized the severity of Sarah's problems until they were adults and responsible for their own spending. Beatrice was the "heir" and Eugenie the "spare", so I can see how one is more care-taking of their mother and the other is more independent of that.

I think Edo helped Beatrice cut the apron strings, or rather he cut them for her. It's one thing to promote your own business through a royal connection but quite another to let that business suffer through the same. And now, with the York family in virtual exile, his royal connection needs to be buried to protect his business. The smart move for Beatrice is to be known as Countess Mapeli Mozzi and put the York title behind her. It won't change her status as an HRH, but it will buy her and her husband's business, some breathing room.
