Getting caught with his mistress at an elephant hunt is what started the cascade leading to Juan Carlos' downfall. It started with Cristina and Inaki being caught embezzeling money from a charity, apparently with Juan Carlos knowing but doing nothing about it. I don't see where Letizia factors into any of this, unless it was to stand with her husband in not covering up their misdeeds.
