Larry Reynolds was a nice guy, rather reserved compared to your regular college basketball Head Coach, but the probation really hit the trajectory of the program hard.

He didn't set the world on fire, but there were a couple of notable things about his 5 year tenure. First, he improved his win total every year, culminating in a 24 win season in 2006-07. Second, he also took the team to the NCAA's in that year. Monson had 2 in like 50 years coaching at LBSU. Acker can only dream of ever getting to the NCAA tournament.
I get the point that there is no sure fire way to select a head coach, but things have changed since paying for players is now legal. Every year, LBSU will lose 6-7 of their top players to the portal, that's a given. You have to pull together a new team in a matter of 30 days or so and then you have about 45 days of preseason practice to get the players to learn the system and play together. I'm sorry - a P4 assistant coach (like Acker) just doesn't have the experience to deal with that. Hire someone who's been doing that for years like a successful D2 coach or even a JUCO coach (remember Tark and Olson).

I doubt a lot of ADs know how to interview, many rely on a network and references that can be trusted (heck trusting an search firm is not a given).
it's not like interviewing is a skill necessary developed in Sports Management field
no excuse, just not surprised at any hire this guy would do.
still Bob Williams was a successful D2 coach, Pat Douglas,. and succesful Juco coaches (Tarkanian, Boyd Grant), and assistant coaches. There is no formula. Depends on how they go about their process. Who knows with this AD, he exhibited familiarity bias we know from his SDSU hires. That's not good generally.
have to wonder who would even want to coach, having to recruit 13 players every year, vs 3-5 lol.

There is no formula for success. Reynold's record and legacy was much worse than Wayne Morgan's.
This AD has very little experience with the entire interview and hire process, and worse, he seems to have pretty bad judgement about what skills are important or required.
There are usually very qualified people in every candidate pool. It takes effort and time to screen them, interview them and find the right fit. That's too much trouble for Smitheran.

I don't know much about her other than what's in her bio but it most likely won't work out. I'll keep an open mind, but hiring a P4 assistant (like Amy) just isn't the right fit these days for a low-major like us. This is like when we hired Wayne Morgan who was an assistant at Syracuse. Coaching at TCU or Syracuse and at the Niners is like night and day. I don't think these P4 assistants know what's going to hit them...I know they just want their first crack at head coaching. Hiring a local successful D2 head coach, like Cal Poly Pomona's Danelle Bishop would have been my choice. They know how a build a team annually with many new players. Good luck to Minyon but I don't think this will pan out, like most of Slytherin's hires.
