But when you disagree with ccman… you’ve started a war lol. Sometimes it’s fun though to rile him or her up from time to time though Previous Message
Yes, there are certain players that are improving individually. I meant more program growth. After looking legit in December, they have regressed. And don't look like a team that's fighting to win for 40 minutes.
Sure Wainwright and Askew each shot the lights out in the second half of their respective losses. But especially at Northridge, the effort in the first half was abysmal. Going down 28 points is horrendous.
As a program, there's nothing that's pointing in the right direction. And in the portal era, it's unclear if some of our better players with eligibility will even opt to return. I.e. Kam, Wainwright, DMX, and Nagy are the one's that I hope do.
What even happened to Ramel Lloyd? Haven't even seen him on the bench.
would disagree about no growth.
Acker's struggled to counter for Big West opponents after the first week.
Martin has grown, grown and regressed
Lewis has definitely grown this year defensively, a little offensively, but not much in the right flow for taking a shot. still too in a hurry.
Wainright has improved.
DMX improved.
Denson, tough guy with bad habits to coach.
he's got a bunch of projects.
the Big West is brutal. the coaches know by and large what they are doing.
I do agree Acker is showing some teaching struggles though
I agree other coaches have done better first year, in Poly's case the coach was able to bring in players that already knew his system.
not an excuse, no question will need to both get some more talent and adjust/teach his system.
we'll see what he can do to adjust the offense. I don't like the spacing. it's heavily depending on really good ball handling far away from the bucket, yuk. it also puts the ball in Askew's hands a lot, which is understandable.
we don't pass and dish well like other teams.
next year we'll see his growth. Newman and DeGeorge I think benefitted from years as a head coach, adjusting offenses.
Still not sure that if we ran what Poly does, that we'd be any better, might be worse. or what Northridge does.
Les was a prior head coach, he struggled for 3-4 years with really poor week defensive teams.
Turner took a few years.
I wouldn't say it's in disarray. I saw a team that competed hard and adjusted vs. North and Poly 2nd half, despite some really poor 1st halfs

My post had nothing to do with Monson. So I'm not sure if you're responding to me or the other commenter.
That being said, I don't think you can compare Monson's first year with Acker's first year. College basketball is so different, and other first-year BW coaches have performed better in this era. Just look at the two teams that beat us last week.
I think Acker absolutely deserves an elongated chance. Hopefully he learns more about being a D-1 head coach, and the types of players he needs to go after in the portal. Hopefully there are a lot of positives to come.
My point is that nothing I've seen this year is evidence of growth, which is a huge concern. Previous Message
these doom and gloom prognostications are silly
by that standard, Monson's first year was lost and not viable. had dominant player Donovan Morris (Askew), one nice frosh recruit, Plater (Kam Martin)
no offense, it's clear at this point you have no faith in Acker, who btw does communicate to stakeholders better than MOnson ever did.
the idea we are 'stuck' for 4 years, yeah, it's called a contract. and yeah, I think it's clear he's got work cut out. to make these conclusions is so frggn premature it's sad. people that would give a guy after 13, 14 years and in lower tier (8th place, 7th place losing to a 1-19 team, more rope, won't give a 1st year coach an inch of rope, that's sad it really is.
still. it's not a lost year. it's basketball. the program was in disarray last year entering the BWCT with horrific way below expectations regular season, attendance in decline, non communicating coach.....until got a nice present the week of the BWCT. Monson left the program in dissarary. Not Smitherin, not Acker. Monson, your buddy left the program and aslo crapping on the Unviersity on his way out.
the program is in much better shape than last year, with a coach with the talent to beat USC and Michigan on the road and win the BWCT, but not enough consistency to go better than 10-10 in a BWCT that was markedly down compared to this year.
seriously, the guy is a first year coach, with a motley crew he had to assemble on the fly because the prior coach drove the program into 'blahness'
if people want to dump all over Acker, that's their perogative. but sheesh, have some perspective of the huge mediocre mush and the program mired and stuck in the mud Previous Message
This is already a lost year. It appears we are stuck for the next 4 years. Not a viable situation.
