Why don't I think we can attract another quality big? First, Lassina has two years of eligibility left and was the best big in the league last season. UCSB attracted two highly rated guys (who have not had success on the level yet) because they have immediate playing time available. Add in that our Coach is in the last year of his contract, and seems unlikely to be renewed. That means any longer term promises made by the staff are meaningless. Add in that prior to Lassina, Monson has had limited success with big men.
Why do I think we might attract a quality PG for depth. First, there is playing time to be had. Yes we just added Silva, who was highly rated out of HS. But there is really no one else, and lots of playing time. All a player has to believe is that there will be an opportunity to win the starting job and they can beat out a guy who averaged 3.2 ppg last season. Plus, Monson actually has a great track record of developing PGs. We are still hampered by the lame duck status of the coaching staff.
And for me, the bottom line is that we have a real need for PG depth. We have perhaps the best frontcourt of the Monson era in the Traores, Stroud, Polynice and Ngoyi. We have quality wings in Jones and George. We have a guard who is really good in the paint in Tsohonis. But to make it all work, we are relying on a PG who is unproven at the D1 level and averaged all of 3.2 ppg last season. If he gets hurt, or if he can't be the guy we need, we have no depth. Tsohonis is not a PG, the team does not do well with him running the offense. Find us another PG!
