It might as well be called the Participation Games. All you really had to do was make it to the mat at districts, and in some cases, that almost guaranteed you a spot at state. Not only is the competition watered down and weak, but they also spread it over three days, clearly aiming to maximize profits. The finals format will feature 24 mats laid out, compared to the traditional four—one per class. It’s pathetic and the wish should be ashamed

Oh no such a big deal that the first round has a few more bad match ups. Does it make placing or winning a state title easier, no. Not sure how not having regionals has “watered down” state. Now if you talk about combining classifications that’s one thing but this change did not water it down. How many times have you seen a 4th place kid from a tougher region take out a regional winner from a weak region in the past. One could argue that the 5th place kid from the stacked region would have had a better chance to place than the 1st-4th place kids from the weak region. Does the new format let in some kids that are not “deserving” yeah but they will be 2 and done and probably with a nice view of the lighting so who cares, it doesn’t affect the top end kids. It will let a few kids in that will place that wouldn’t have made it based only by the region they are from. So actually it probably makes the placing rounds tougher than in the past. Change is hard for people I know but maybe let it play out.

No need to beat this dead horse........... it is what it is and we all know it....legit wrestlers will be there on the podium in the end...wiaa will make there money............ no need for alternates they are NOT needed they are the group that made it to state with no regionals.............. lets wrestle

I think it is a good thing that someone is making money in wrestling as that is a hard thing to due. Probably not too many multi-millionaires running around the T-Dome this weekend.

Can They use the money that’s made to at least hire a good announcer? This guy stinks. Dumb line of the day “ unless my wife is in the room, there’s nothing more beautiful than 24 mats spread out on a floor”. Nah bra , come on now. Tell her that on Valentine’s Day last week. This isn’t “Love Connection” bro.

Chuck, that WAS pretty cheesy! And... I won't make a habit of it. You'd be wrong about the "Love Connection" though, it put a twinkle in her eye. After 33 years of her right next to me for every wrestling season! Yep, I am the last man standing from Ed Aliverti's crew. I have no misgiving that I will EVER be a quarter the announcer he was. Yet, with every passing year I'll try to stink a little less, LOL! Wish me luck.

Good luck. I enjoyed knowing when there was a big match or wrestlers squaring off that should be featured. Let the fans know . Maybe a little homework on who people are. I did hear the Derochers mentioned 10 or so times but hardly anyone else. The fans can be educated on who some of these kids are and their accomplishments. It’s not entirely your fault since WIAA decided to run so many tournaments compared to Ed’s days. But this year was scaled down to 4 rather than 6or 7 whatever it was last year. The announcing was excellent compared to the abysmal management and logistics of the event organizers. Why the finals matches were placed at the back of the dome rather than the mats closest to 90% of the seating befuddles me. I will say the floor event management was great and less confrontational than past years. Maybe the blue jackets they got to change into rather than those yellow had them in a better mood. Having kids at a dome at 6am.. to me, until 9 pm at night is rediculous. Weigh ins taking 40 minutes tells me a few more scales could be brought in. Total money grab from WIAA with little thought on student athlete welfare and focus. Should I go on? I was glad that the tent city CHAZ or CHOP imitation camps were cleaned up a bit after day 1. I love wrestling and seeing kids and a culminating event like State being a show. I thought it was pathetic, that being said I’ll be back until I’m in the grave because it’s about the kids and acknowledging their excellence. On another note, while close calls and judgement is part of all athletic events, the need to have so many refs due to over inflating the tourney(s), is pathetic. None of my athletes that was there directly to support lost a match they rightfully won because of officiating, but some did. Misjudgment is allowed, but when incompetence is the case because the literal bottom of the barrel is being scraped to find enough officials, that’s in the WIAA. It would be like putting me out there to ref football or basketball, I’d be out of my element. A clearly sad avoidable situation.

If any of you complaining about this constantly paid attention or hav3 been around the sport in coaching circles. You would know for 10 years some of the top coaches in the state have been calling for straight to state and do away with regionals. It's not all 5he WIAA, even though a reason they got on board 2as because regionals was losing money for them. Nothing is watered down and imo, this format will make wrestling stronger in the state. It will help more wrestlers realize what's possible and they will want to focus on their wrestling more.

Lowering standards because they won't raise theirs does not make wrestling stronger.

What is the news from the floor? Anybody keeping score want to chime in on the fat, old, slow, bad knee having JV ref? Any fan ready to complain about viewing opportunities or lack thereof? 32 person brackets equals future is now?

As for me, I chose work today and Friday. Going to hate missing two more four timers for the girls. I really miss saying hi to the folks that I only get to see at state.

Next year, maybe.

I wrestled in the 90’s 3 classifications a real walk of champions and Mr. Ed Aliverti On the mic. All though in my opinion the wrestling was better then it has become more entertaining now because of social media like this great website and obviously the involvement of women’s wrestling. Regardless of our opinions we go we watch and we keep coming back to see the changes and the new crop of wrestlers to step on the mat.

I only wish our D-1 colleges would step up and throw their hats back in the ring. It’s time especially with women’s wrestling becoming so popular

Anyone know if the dome menu changes at midnight to start serving breakfast? Can only eat so many dome dogs, and seeing as we will be here another 5 hours for finals to finish..

Our state tournament is like a classic car that someone made modifications to and completely ruined. Lets no longer call it the Mat Classic. There was not a lot classic about it now. Next year lets brand it the Wrestling Palooza I.
