Out of Season Club Coaching

Help me understand this rule, my AD didn’t even know what freestyle was so I need advice from those in the wrestling community.

Wiaa:
17.5.1 For the purposes of the out-of-season regulations, the WIAA has determined that slow pitch and fast pitch softball; interscholastic/collegiate/folk style/ USA wrestling, freestyle wrestling, and Greco-Roman wrestling; and unified sports teams shall be considered separate and distinct sports.

Questions:
1. Can a coach of a high school coach his own wrestlers in folkstyle in a USA club outside of the season. For example spring or summer?

2. Can they coach freestyle all year long since it considered a different sport?

3. Can a high school coach run a youth club during his hs season that includes kids who will go to his school?

I see all of these things happening but would love to get the actual rules down so I know I’m in compliance. Thank you!

Yes.

Clever coaches can coach their high school year long if they are teaching them separate from folkstyle.

Freestle and Greco apply to this.

Every move you can do in Folkstyle is legal is freestyle.

1. No. The WIAA has specific guidelines toward this in its handbook. With that said, we know certain coaches and programs skirt the rules... but it's not allowed. There is a narrow window in the summer when all coaching is allowed.

2. Yes. A long time ago, a group of coaches sued the WIAA, which established Freestyle/Greco as distinct, separate sports from folkstyle. As such, there is no limitation on club FS/Greco practices as far as the WIAA is concerned. The WSWA has a competition season for FS/GR, but there are no rules against practicing year round.

3. Per WIAA guidelines, yes. However, most districts with open enrollment (where kids get to choose their HS and it's not based on proximity/location) will have rules about this.

IT WAS DECIDED IN THE COURTS. freestyle AN D Greco ARE SEPATE SPORTS SO YES YOU ARE SORT OF CORRECT BUT NO YOU ARE WRONG AS FREESTYLE AND GRECO ARE NOT hIGH school WRESTLING. THE VIDEO USED IN COURT SHOWED ONE GUY WINNING UNDER FREESTYLE RULES AND THE OTHER WINNING UNDER COLLEGIAE.

That's what I said - re-read my words.

A coach can coach FS/GR at a club year-round and the WIAA doesn't care.

Virtually all the top programs have some sort of year round schedule. Many also are involved with the jr team as well. Those that don't and only wrestle Nov-Feb. are the schools kids transfer out of. Fact.

We call those programs and coaches - "Seasonal".

Nothing wrong with that approach, just don't expect to compete well at the Dome for team points, although you may do well in your league.

Not everybody has the capacity to remain plugged in as much as others.

I coach 10 months a year.

A few guts and a few laces in September and October and we’re coaching freestyle and Greco

The honest truth is myself and my staff would rather coach freestyle and Greco so we don’t spend much too/bottom work unless it’s November-February

Most High School coaches are coaching 10-11 months a year.

High school is November-February.

Freestyle/Greco is March-May.

Then there’s the summer practice window and team camps in June/July.
