The Sad State Of Washington Womens Wrestling

A season full of scrambles because we cant find full teams to dual.
The WIAA splitting girls into 4 has absolutely diluted what was once an honor to get to State. All for greed to see how many Grannys, Aunts and Uncles can fill the stands. All at the cost of Washington Womans Wrestling being Legit. Its not. Just three years ago we had one division and we struggled to have duals and ended up with scrambles. Now we have 4 Divisions and still have scrambles non stop all season.

I know overall there has been some issues but MCC has 8 girls duals every year

In 2007 many people were saying there wasn't enough girls to start a state tournament. They made all the same complaints you made now. The sport has only continuously grown this state.

You are correct the sort has grown. The problem is not with the number of participants, it is with the level of talent. When all combined the difference between the 1 - 16 is recognizable. Separate by school size, have 32 participants and voila, first round pins are the norm. How to fix? I would say take a look at number of participants and make it smaller, going back to 16 is best. This year is going to be a learning lesson for somebody.

It hasnt grown enough with talent to split 4 times. We have girls going to State that won 5 matches all year. Our School District is struggling to provide transportation for all the girls (multiple high schools) to get to the Tacoma Dome. Many of these girls should not have the honor of stating they made it to State. Its an absolute stinking money grab by the WIAA.

As someone who wrestled when it was 3 divisions and 13 weight classes, I see your point but you will get over it. It used to drive me crazy that kids who “should not have the honor” were making it to state. Prior to 1996, 624 kids made it. Then is the early 2000s 1120 kids made it, essentially the same as the top 7 from regionals prior to 1996. Now, it’s 2240 boys make it to state, or the equivalent of the top 14 from each pre 1996 region. My point is, it’s been happening for years and the sport has only gotten bigger. Expansion is good and eventually the talent will catch up or least be close. Congrats to all!

The state will not mention "money grab" oh hell no. They will probably hide behind some horribly misconceived notion of Title IX. They don't give a damn about talent level at state. Some 5 win and 20 loss wrestler seeded 29 or lower is going to get hurt, possibly to the point of quitting the sport. The girls 3A district at Oak Harbor today is sending 10 to state. I wonder how #'s 9 and 10 will do next week in Tacoma.

After looking at last year's 3A/4A girls brackets, here are some fun numbers. 20 person brackets, somebody else can come up with how many matches that is for 14 weight classes. There were 356 pins. I'm going to guess that is in the 80 - 90% range.

Here is an idea, we should separate the two classes and have 32 per bracket. That should make it better!

Oh man with numbers like that it leads me to lay some odds. I say the over/under for pins in the girls brackets, all the brackets, is 1800.5. Any takers?

Faith Tourrant will spend less than 8:00 on the mat.
Also seeking that fourth title.

Both of those are over under prop bets.

Which hotel? Emerald Queen or perhaps the Tacoma Dome in? I heard the Inn was giving out $50 Bet Vouchers to Saturday Night stayers. They wont $379 for a room on Saturday Night, but the $50 voucher is appealing.

How is this going to work with 32 man brackets? Before, you knew if you made it to the 2nd day, you were going to medal. Are they going to keep it that way and have the girls stay later the 1st day?

Shit if only there were 32 ladies wrestling in each bracket. I don’t think there is a bracket of girls who don’t have byes. I have seen girls make it to state with 1 win and 10 losses. Others that were 1-2 in each tournament. They need to make this back to how it originally was. But if not let’s keep the little and big schools…more competition and matches that last more than 1 period.

For half of the wrestlers, Day 1 is a full day and Day 2 is a half-day, so I'd wager they will be at top 8.

For the other half, Day 1 is a half day and Day 2 is a full day, so I'd expect that they won't be at top 8.

Just a guess, though.

This will prove to be a horrible trial year. I hope WIAA sees this and goes back to 16 man brackets next year. This is horrible for all divisions not just girls. So many kids across the state with losing records. Someone should pull that data. How many kids made it to state that were under .500

With reports of brackets not being full I am changing the bet on number of pins. The new over/under is 1780.5. They are going to happen and there will be many. If you already placed your bet through my cousin Vito, no refunds. All bets are final.

Districts need to be eliminated and have two day multi districts to replace regional. Get it down to 16 man brackets for boys and 💯 for the girls. It makes girls wrestling look like a joke. There are very talented boys that didn’t make it to state, and girls that don’t even know what a whizzer is or how to sprawl will be at state.

The tournament has a cap for participants.

Once reached there are some things to factor in….divisions and which session they will wrestle in.

How many officials are available

After those factors are considered there is a chance it opened again to allow X number of athletes in and the closes after met again.

Some of the HS kids will not wrestle in it after a long 2 day HS tournament and that sucks because they used up part of the registration numbers but several will.

Opens….we want college wrestling here but let’s cut out their division? That doesn’t make sense either. Washington is one of the few states that still has open divisions. It’s great for those of us that want to compete still!
