VW Passat 201 - ABS fault, code 03842 - Fixed #

Year of Manufacture *: 2012

Good morning.

Just a quick look to see if any one has come across this before. I believe it has a A.B.S pump problem.

Customer is having problems with his A.B.S, was intermittent at first, but now solid fault.

Fault code reads 03842, rpm sensor rear right, incorrect signal, 000-.

Have scoped all four wheel speed sensors at the sensors and at the pump, all look ok apart from the rear right, believe they are hall effect looking at the wiring on ESI,

You get 12v and 0v, at the good ones and you can see the rotation on the 12v

The bad one has 4v on both, when you scroll the ignition or clear the fault it pops to 12v and 0v for a second then back to 4v on both and the A.B.S warning comes on.

Has any one come across this before???

Any pointers or help much appreciated.

Hi
i've just had a 2011 passat with that code, abs, esp, epb & tpms lights all lit up & stop start fault fault showing on dash.
checked the reluctor ring first,got the pico out ended up being the abs sensor, new one was grey (genuine) one fitted was black.
solved all the problems instantly

Hi Steve

Not had that specific code /system but a couple of points that may help

1) if the fault comes back without driving it is unlikely to be a reluctor ring/ mechanical fault.

2) many of these modern systems shut the circuit down if it detects a fault, this is what i think you are seeing on the scope.

3)I think you may have a sensor fault, if possible you could connect wiring to the known good sensor with suitable jump wires to prove a point.

4) disconnect wires to both good & bad side, check both side with a scope on start up and compare. if both follow same test cycle it would indicate wiring & ECU ok

I usually test Hall effect sensors by breaking into the circuit at the connector and measuring current (in series with the sensor). They usually switch between 8 and 16mA as the wheel is revolved. Take care not to reverse the polarity to the sensor as they don't like that.
I have had several now where the signal measures good but the ECU still cannot see a speed reference. I think this is unlikely in your case, I would say it appears to be a short circuit sensor causing the ECU to shut down supply to it.

Hi chaps thanks for the replies, all fixed now, as mentioned it turned out to be the sensor, obtained one off T.P.S in the end (grey in colour), pages and euro sent black ones out, (Bosch mind you), looked the same but giving me strange scope stuff and not fixing it

Glad you got it sorted.Just a question,how much time and money have you saved by fitting sub-standard parts?

Yet again counterfeit parts rear their head, so Pages and ECP supplying rubbish, and people here have slated me for stating that, think this post proves the point

This is turning into an epidemic, I just replaced another one this AM.

Q. at a retail price of £55 for genuine, why would you risk fitting aftermarket parts and shooting yourself in the foot?

Aftermarket sensors are predominantly naff quality /supplied as incorrect for application / Junk.

andrew young, tony bickers they came all marked up as Bosch and all seemed legit, I think maybe it was just the wrong type of sensor instead of intelligent?

Maybe you andrew and tony can get together and take out a Class action and take Pages and E.C.P to court for selling counterfeit goods?

This is where aftermarket supplying "genuine" parts, falls flat on its arse, as you have found Steve, ask yourself this question, "how much is genuine part from TPS?, Jon has told you, Â£55 quid, how much did you pay for the wrong sensor that you fitted as supplied by a factor, probably about the same, just because a part arrives from a factor in a branded box does not mean the part inside that box is right and genuine, I NEVER use factor sensors on any motor newer than 2000,of any kind, I do not trust factors,so go genuine !
