BMW 3 Series (E46) 330i Ci 2006 - Throttle pedal fault - Fixed #

Hi All

Mileage 87,000

There are no fault codes present

When the vehicle is driven it suddenly has no response from the throttle, sort of goes into limp, when you back off it is then OK for a few miles. When it has no response the DSC light flashes

I am suspecting a throttle pedal unit

I have tested the sweep on pin 4 & 6

One side peaks a about 4.2v the other 2.2v

Would you say there is a problem with this pedal unit?

Hi Peter,
Going from the info posted, I would say no !
I've had "similar" experience on an Audi, with low power and ABS/DSC lamps coming on, fault was with the air flow meter !

Have you had a look in ABS Peter, looks to me like its detecting a fault and reducing power.
I did one a while ago and it had a bad wheel speed sensor, no fault code. I had to drive it and watch the speeds, one wheel would jump in speed, so it thought it was over speeding and doing it's job.
You could try switch off the dsc on the dash and drive it to see.

i agree with what chris said ,

its a good idear to graph the wheel speed sensors ,

if they look ok

look at brake switches, pressure sensors, and any other inputs you can find that have the ability to lie to the computer .

Thanks for the excellent info, look like the pedal is functioning correctly

Checked the MAF, the waveform looks OK to me?

I checked in ABS and no fault codes, I took it for a test drive and the triangle came up and reduced power (scanner connected)

I then stopped and pressed the DSC button, warning triangle on permanent, but it then drove OK, no power loss

Looking at the live data the Right Rear Wheel speed data looks a bit scruffy, could this cause the problem?

rear right is a problem .

i can not rember if the reluctor is a toothed wheel or a magnetic type on the bearing , if its a toothed wheel try wire brushing to clean it up

For future testing Peter, i would recommend trying the autocom as the flight recorder is good on abs .

I have seen this on an E90 .Fault to o/s/r speed sensor.Strange that it does not bring on abs light,only Dsc warning.

Hi Peter
Marginally increase the airgap by putting thin washer under sensor hold down bolt, the sensor will be clouting the ring gear.

Hi Peter.

Have seen the tone rings on the driveshafts giving trouble. The shaft rusts which pushes the tone ring closer to the sensor in spots giving these exact symptoms.

The only real way to catch it is with an oscilloscope.

Hi Peter,

I agree with Ed & Fiachra, you will find a damaged sensor due to corrosion under the ring.

Fit a new sensor and as Ed says increase & check the airgap to prevent it happening again.

Provided the ring isn't broken you should be fine but document the invoice that ideally it needs a new reluctor ring.

I could be wrong, but I think the abs ring is in the bearing on these.

Hi Pete

If this is the thin steel ring on the driveshaft
turn the wheel and look at the ring and you may see a polished spot where the sensor is touching the ring.

The ring is thin so a build up of rust under it will distort it

Unless I'm seeing it or understanding it wrong, why is the o/s/r
abs sensor reading 12mph different. (Min/max value)

Replaced the sensor this morning with a thin washer underneath, as mentioned a slightly raised ABS ring was causing a problem
