Brake wheel cylinder leakage - When to replace? #

I was in a workshop today and the tech working next to me was servicing a Peugeot. The rear drums were off and an inspection behind the brake cylinder rubber boots revealed a small amount of brake fluid.He suggested that new cylinders were needed.

My thoughts were a small amount of fluid is acceptable and not enough to warrant new cylinders.(both sides were the same and had been renewed 18 months ago.So my question to you guys,Is there any hard and fast rules for replacement? Btw, the car had just passed an mot with no issues on the braking system.

Hi Andy.
My opinion is if in doubt f**k it out.

In this day of suing everyone I would be even more careful.

I bet if an AA inspection was carried out (or engineers report) they would condemn them.

A little bit of common sense cannot be used anymore because of ambulance chasers.

If I pull the cover back and fluid drips/runs out, then I would advise new cylinders.

New cylinders needed. cars now going 20k between services makes me extra cautious, by the next service chances are the shoes will be soaked.

Cost of cylinders is peanuts in comparison to any grievance.

I always recommend replacement on the basis that the drums aren't coming off again for perhaps another 3yrs. The facings will be soaked by then. Every 36,000 used to be Peugeot's interval. I've noticed Ford service schedules now specify drum removal only in the event of leakage.
I grew up in an era when wheel cylinders started to leak as the car drove out of the showroom. Who remembers Fiat 126 cylinders, which used simple 'O' rings?

Hi

Most of my work is servicing, if you peak behind the wheel cylinder rubbers and there is fluid I advise customer on service check sheet and invoice that they require replacement within 3 months. If it comes back in 12 months and shoes are soaked, then they just have an even bigger bill. Just put the onus on the customer to come back and have them replaced as its a safety issue

I also grew up in the era of cars with drums all round and manual adjusters, very rarely changed the cylinders, just got repair kit usually Lockheed or Girling which had a new cylinder and seals. All bled out with your jam jar and bleed tube, you topped up with brake fluid from the the last bleed job

no such thing as boiling points or water content in them days

PS: I used to hate doing suspension repairs on Morris Minors, must have been the only car on the planet where you needed every spanner in your tool box, every nut was a different size

how many of you see a car for the first time thats been main dealer serviced thats done over 30,000 miles and still got the clips holding the drums on from the factory

Is there any need to remove the drums in first 30000 miles ?

Clearly as vehicle gets older it makes sense to check on a more regular basis.
