Vauxhall Zafira 1.6 2008 - Starter motor current draw? #

Hi

Can anyone tell me what they would expect the starter current draw to be on a 2008 Zafira 1.6 petrol on initial cranking?

Hi

I think I remember James Dillon, stating that as a rule of thumb typical starter crank amps should be approx 3 x batt amp hr rating. e.g. if battery spec is 60 amp hr the crank amps will be 180 amp.

Both cranking amps and cranking speed will be effected considerable by battery condition and temperature, so this needs to be considered.

also worth noting cranking amps will vary greatly on initial start ,they will be high until the starter gets going , and engine compression is also a factor, a engine with 190 psi in cylinder will draw more as opposed to one with 120 psi

Yes that helps very much thanks. I did the same test and I'm consistently getting close to 680amps peak current draw and voltage is dropping down to 7.5 Volts. I have CAN BUS communication fault code intermittent and have a tech bulletin from ECU testing stating that starter draw & voltage drop could be the problem.

680A is that after the initial crank? I.E. the continuous current draw? I would be expecting around the 100-120A mark ish for a 1.6 petrol but as has been said the peak current draw will be very high until the starter gets moving.

not sure if i am correct but as a rule of thumb should be approx. multiply 3 times amp hour rating of battery that should give you indication of current draw, i think this is one of those gems of information from James Dillon.
