Mini 2009 - Poor heater - Fixed #

Year of Manufacture *: 2009. Petrol

Cold air at normal temp. No codes. When revved will eventually give warm air. Water pump has been replaced. Is there any bleed screws etc. can't see any. This vehicle has the Peugeot engine. Coolant was clean.

There is a revised thermostat assembly available for later cars. The symptoms we encountered were a false (High) temp. reading causing the cooling fan to operate on a cold engine. Don't remember if the heater was affected. We always use an airlift to fill these.

Looking at the friction wheel driving the water pump. When cold the pump is being driven. I thought the pump did not drive until a certain temp. The friction wheel assembly may have been removed without putting into the service position. Does it have to go into the service position ? And if it has to go into the service position could this be why the pump is turning when cold. This is driving me nuts. Can't seem to find much info. Any help appreciated .

Hi Les,

If the friction device is faulty wouldn't it cause a cooling problem under hard load conditions? Is there maybe a flow problem through the matrix, maybe try back flushing with a hose pipe, As to the friction wheel being temperature controlled wouldn't a no or low flow condition detract from quick heater warm up. Doesn't make sense to me but modern motor cars very rarely do

I think the idea is if no flow in engine the water will heat up faster then at the correct temp the water pump come into action and then the flow will give you heat at heater.
Please correct me if I am wrong

On the N12 engine the water pump is decoupled from the friction wheel as requested by the DME but on the N14 it is constantly engaged.

There is a bleed screw on the thermostat housing. The friction wheel does have to be put into a service position by pulling the plastic cord but you would struggle to refit without having done so, so I guess this must have been done correctly. Is the friction wheel complete though? Usually the plastic outer wheel breaks off and leaves just the metal inner.

Got a new friction wheel assembly. No black plastic on wheel just a metal roller. Fitted. On start up the pump turns for about 5 seconds then disengages. You can spin the pump pulley by hand. Then when engine is hot the assembly engages and turns the pump. The modified assembly comes with a different plug. To change the wires over is a bit of a pain. After bleeding the system we have hot air don't know if there was air in the system to cause this but the damage to pump pulley and the faulty friction assembly did not help.
