Ford C Max 2.0 2004 - PAS Fault, already had pump and steering angle sensor replaced - Fixed #

Hi All,

i currently have in a Ford C Max with intermittent loss of power steering,

The vehhicle has been else where and had new pump, steering angle sensor and "software update".

i have checked for fault codes and none found,

Got to the pump and checked the +ve and -ve and all good.

it works when you start it, and then comes and goes as it pleases,

Live data showing constant 15amp feed by the pump, when it fails and when it comes back on full lock under load we are seeing approx 80amps draw.

Fluid in pump reservoir is black..

Any direction on this would be great..

Using Alldata and following their fault finding for PAS it is telling me to replace rack, but not giving me any real tests to carry out?

Hi Kris,
We had in recently a 2010 Mondeo that the owner has self diagnosed as a steering pump, he supplied the pump and asked us to replace it.
Turned out the fault was the crank pulley !!

Thanks for your response,

This vehicle has an electric PAS pump, mounted below the o/s headlight..

Charge rate is fine..

Sounds like whoever fitted the old pump didn't flush out the old fluid in the rack and pipework.

Throw a amp clamp on the pump and see what it does on the scope working/not working.

We had a similar fault about 2 years ago that we traced to a large wire to the pump had rotted internally. I think there was a loom repair available from ford.

Will carry out an amps clamp check this morning with the picoand come back to you with the results,

Someone has already run a new +ve power supply straight from the PAS fuse in the fuse box to the pump, although that itself looks made for the vehicle, with the correct pins at one end and correct terminal to attach to the fuse box on the other end.

Just a thought, the oil for this is not usual PAS fluid, it is greem nineral oil. Autodata will give you correct specs

We have been using the green mineral oil within the system, have tried to flush also but fluid comes out black?! Customer is in India for few months so car is in corner of workshop until we get quiet spells to work on it.. Might try and go in on a Sunday and spend a bit of time on this...

Finally spent a little time on this vehicle.

Scoped the +ve / -ve and can lines and all were good, Decided to throw a amps clamp around the +ve feed and monitored the current draw when the fault occured, i noticed excessive current draw when the steering locked! 80+ amps!

checked the pipework for blockages and were ok, Customer supplied his own rack and all was well!

We had on full lock 45-50 amps on full lock, This i was happy with seeing as we had a lot more before when the fault occured and the fuse is rated at 80amps..

Not had much experience with these, What sort of current would be about acceptable on this?
