Ford Focus 1.6 2005 - Catalytic convertor problem #

Anybody know why only one of the canisters actually has an element (and I'm told they are like this from new)? How does that work two cylinders gases are untreated???

The fact it has 2 rear oxygen sensors, makes me think, it is supposed to have monoliths in both of them.
Think somebody might be telling porkies.

To be honest it was only when the well renowned Cat collectors and experts (you now who) came for our old cat's that this was pointed out to me. I've had the this car back in with the new cat on and out of curiosity I scoped the two downstream sensors, one was flat line 0.7v the other was switching as fast as the upstream, but when I checked the live data through the DLC both sensor where indicated as being flat line 0.7v so it sounds like there's a software adaption to cancel out the one cat. I can't believe what I'm finding!

I don't have any answers as I don't see to many Fords, but I would hope that others in the group could look out for similar and do a quick check to verify,

I would be happy to bet a weeks wages that, if I ordered one from the dealer, that both monolith would be present!

I wouldn't be so sure Dave.

Thinking about this later, I've got a nagging feeling, when I was back in the dealer in 2001, I changed one myself, and it only had one monolith in there....

But as time has a funny way of distorting the mind, I can't be 100% sure.

However, I purchased a '98 Merc ML320 some time ago that had a raspy o/s exhaust system, and emissions test figures for the previous 3 years that were close to the limit at idle. Turned out to have neither pre, nor main cat in the downpipe, even though it had both pre and post O2 sensors (no DTC's for cat).
