BMW X5 2008 - Fault on electric park brake - Unresolved #

Hi all
Got this vehicle in at the mo with fault on handbrake. A while ago customer parked up handbrake on all ok, left it for 10 mins when walking back to it she heard a loud screech and when she got into it the park brake would not release. Used the emergency release tool and everything was fine. Did it again the other day, ive got quite a few faults stored.

600E control unit for park brake faulty internal fault.
6011 control unit for park brake faulty internal fault.
601D ESP control unit CAN message faulty.
601E ESP/EGS/DME CAN message faulty.
6023 power supply terminal 30 faulty.
6031 parking brake emergency release implemented.
6045 erase error memory cannot associate error.
601B vehicle speed CAN message faulty.

Ive checked the power to the park brake unit and that seems fine. Do these suffer from park brake units failing? It seems to be working fine at mo. Ive done some research and seems to be a sowtware update but not for these faults. Any advice would be most appreciated.

It's probably the handbrake shoes that need replacing or adjusting. when there is too much slack to pull up they make that horrible screech.

Hi Chris
Sorry forgot to mention i had it in last week and checked the linkages to see if they were siezed and adjusted the shoes. These faults have come back since then.

Has it stopped the screeching then? and now you just have fault codes, but everything is working?

Hi Chris
Sorry for late post, yes the screeching has stopped and the faults are only present. Ive cleared all the faults and told the customer to try it. The park brake is working fine at the mo. Am I right in thinking that the when the car is running and you apply the handbrake all four wheels brake through the service brake and the park brake only applies when you switch off the engine?

Yes you're right, it works with the DSC, so might be worth checking that module for fault codes too.

There is faults in the DSC.
6F4E Parking brake CAN message error in data transfer.
6DE6 Parking brake CAN message error in system.
6EC4 Unknown fault
6EBE Parking brake CAN message power supply too low.
6DDB Parking brake CAN message error in system.
6E09 Parking brake CAN message error in system.
I'm thinking towards a fault in the park brake control unit, but not 100% certain. The fault hasn't occurred for a while now.

Hi Jamie,

We have one of these and it had to have a parking brake unit/module the other week. Ours is under extended warranty so it was covered with a small excess at BMW.

They are quite expensive, I did find something on internet about removing unit,splitting it and finding water/corrosion on main terminal and that was my option if they bulked on the warranty. I think I saved the link on work computer I will check and post later.

Might be worth checking the battery is good, check voltage when cranking.

Sorry for the late reply, thanks for all your messages and help. The customer has been using the vehicle for a few weeks now and has been fine. I think I will just see how it goes for the time, didn't get chance to check the battery either.
