DPF removal - Insurance issues? #

Year of Manufacture *: 2000

What is the possible implications with dpf or egr removal as far as insurance is concerned ?

Is this going to be classed as a modification and as such cause either an increased premium or invalid policy ?

I have wondered about that too.

There is the insurance issue, which I am sure some insurance companies could use as an excuse for not paying out on a claim, but there is also the issue of modifying an emission related component which I would think is probably a breach of some law related to type approval.

It would be good to hear from an expert on what the likely implications are?

I can't see how they would know, and I don't suppose they would go to the time and trouble of trying to find out and checking.

Don`t kid yourself, if someone gets injured or killed, I am sure they will start looking for blame/compo.

It's the whole type aproval thing that gets messy.
I would have thought that DPF ( or even EGR ) removal or any non manufacturer recomended remap will change the type aproval and , if found out , invalidate the insurance.
The reason I was questioning it is because I have removed DPF on a few vehicles now and wondering if I have done the right thing.

I enquired about DPF removal at my last MOT NT Refresher in December last year. I asked the VOSA Trainer if there was any early discussion about the possibility of DPF "deliberate modification" being introduced to the scheme.

He replied that there had not been any talk of DPF reasons for refusal & we went on to confirm that his own Mazda 6 had been DPF free for a while.

It's not exactly an official VOSA endorsement but it does hint at the mood.

Surely, if the vehicles tax banding is based on emissions, you're claiming cheaper tax than you're supposed too?
Surprised the government hasn't caught onto that one!

Hi

My view would be that from an insurance point of view that performance remaps would be more of an issue and DPF removal. Having said that I avoid both.

I have a customer who is an insurance assessor and will try & remember to ask his view, they will be responsible for identifying such mods.

The big problem for VOSA is consistent test standards and it is difficult to test for DPF removal (assuming casing is there) & ecu remapping. so I think they will avoid until forced to do so.
