Forte Additives #

Hi Guys
do any of you use Forte products my rep has just left them and has gone working for a new company that has been formed by Forte ex employees he has told me that Forte is now the same as Wynns being owned by the same parent company and all there products are the same .The Forte engine flush now contains kerosene I am told by the ex rep that is has never been in Forte products .The new Forte rep has been to see me with the area manager who has said kerosene has always been in the products I said I was always under the impression that the products were detergent based , no answer just waffle about the ex rep and other stuff .Apart from the new stuff being cheaper and untried as any else heard of 4 tec products cheers John

I have taken the decision to run down my stock of flush and fuel additives to the point I will only use them if absolutely necessary, its now becoming to risky to use these products on modern vehicles, I have always been concerned about the flush residues left in the engine and virtually all the manufacturers do not recommend additives despite what the reps spin you

Most of my customers are repeat customers and using quality oil such as Mobil 1 certainly helps, they come back a year later with the oil still looking pretty good, so why flush?

I recently had the Rep from the Mobil Service Centre come in with flush and additives called "Champion" from the Netherlands at £1.50 each (and they are still making a profit) I could order as many as I wanted, but if I re-ordered the price would hike to £4.75

Seems we are all being suckered into using these products as there is huge profit to be made from them. Some garages are charging £15.00 for a flush and £15.00 for a fuel cleaner, so the customer is getting stung £30.00 for product worth a few pence, I would sooner spend more money on a decent oil for the customer

I have also been approached by a company that is pushing into the UK with top spec oils that are becoming factory fill for Merc & BMW and sponsor a F1 team and its half the price of the same spec Mobil 1

That's interesting I missed my rep last week but a message was left saying he was leaving Forte and starting for another company selling an "identical" product for less money best look into this a bit more.

Hi John
I have recently had exactly the same conversation, with old forte rep gone to 4tec. It was only 5 weeks ago he was telling us forte was the best, now its not. He really wants our buiness at 4tec.
I am not convinced of any of it.
It has just given us all the chance to take stock, shop around, and move on, there are lots of other very good alternatives, at the right money, delphi, bg, etc or the big question do we really need to use them at all?

Hi Guys the product is definitely 4tec so where to go next the trouble is I have preached additives to my customers for that long that its going to be hard to stop I think the way to go is to push a top oil like Peter but what sort of money does that retail at ? I will wait for the new Forte rep and the 4 Tec rep and be prepared to do battle John

Hi Guys,

I 1st heard of this about 6 months ago as forte are now owned by a company that also own wynns, If you look on the back of the fort'e "new bottle" it now says made in the EU "ie wynns factory" .
I had been informed a long time ago by a wynns rep that the wynns professional treatments were the same as fort'e.
Kerosene is also used in most flushes despite what they tell you, apparently kerosene has a high lubricant content

Manufacturers do use flushes on problem jobs but don't make it common knowledge.
I tend to try & sell fuel additives and good quality oil and so far been good with that except difficult trying to please price match customers who are only interested in the bottom line

i think these people are pests,additives in my opinion are expensive & not required on the modern"properly" serviced cars!
they get shot down in flames in my reception,
how can it be valve for money selling a product to a customer with no real evidence of its benefits,
watched on tv once,had an imprezza on a dyno & with additives it was down on power & less fuel efficient & all for £15,WOW
just my thoughts , keith.

Well, all i can say is that we use Forte every service. I find we do not see the injection issues with petrol/diesel engines that appear to be common with other garages. I have educated our customer base into preventive maintenance . Not interested in the guy looking for cheapest price , they are more hassle than the worth.I will also add that , not once in the 5 years i have been using Forte , has a customer questioned the extra costing.

Eventually caught up with our Forte rep for a chat. As reps go I quite like this guy and what I mean by that is he says it as it is no waffle or bull. Apparently this new company 4Tec is the result of a falling out with the top people at Forte. The new company has been formed by an employee that got the push. I'm told the products are made in South Africa and are identical apart from a slightly larger percentage in lubricant so they are not quite identical. I pulled his leg saying I've heard they are to be significantly cheaper than Forte he replied £1.00 per bottle cheaper. We,ve used the engine flush and fuel additive for years and compared to other local garages we get no problems with DPFs mind you we also use fully synthetic low ash oil too but only in the last 2years or so. He leaves Forte in June and starts for 4Tec I,ll post the prices on here and maybe we can compare to see who's getting the best deal. The other thing our rep does if anyone complains about the additives on their invoice I refund and he does the same to me. Having said that I've never had a complaint?

If I remember correctly, Unipart additives are also made in South Africa & come in a similar if not identical bottle to Forte products, Wurth a look?

What benefit does having a larger percentage of lubricant in a flush achieve?
If you're already adding it to a lubricant to thin it out & dissolve the residues of carbon off internal components, what benefit does this extra lubricity achieve?

I haven't seen a conclusive argument presented yet to state these products are beneficial to the running of an engine.

As previously stated, most manufaturers do not approve of this type of product.
How can the independent sector approve this type of product against the wishes of the vehicle manufacturer based purely on the opinion of a salesman?
Are we selling these products without any proper evidence of benefit other than a none scientific sheet of imaginative fixes put down to these products by independent workshops.
Placebo effect?

I've seen first hand experience of the Forte engine flush washing the substantial build up of sludge from the inside of the VAG 1.8 Turbo engine & blocking the oil pickup.

Based on the evidence that the oil flush does indeed loosen crud off the engine, the next question would be -: Is it better to leave the baked on sludge where it is or apply a detergent (with high lubricity - why?) which washes the years of detritus into the sump to create a problem where there wasn't one before.

We do stock Forte products & sold umpteen bottles of their Diesel fuel additive to the owner of a 1.9 PD with sticking turbo vanes who was convinced it worked, but every time it arrived for a service it needed a good dose of working to free the mechanism from the carbon that had built up again.
Even though it had a bottle of snake oil(Fuel Additive) applied to the tank every 1K.

Is it possible for someone to provide independnt documented evidence that an oil flush benefits an engine, or that a fuel additive added to gallons of fuel & burnt in the combustion process (or if not burnt what effect does it have on catalysts & DPF's, NOx & O2 sensors Ad blue SCR injection etc?) actually does anything beneficial at all to the running of an engine or it's engine management.

These additive debates usually end up with examples of, "I put one in & it fixed this fault"

If there is solid scientific evidence of a additive product working, where is this evidence & could we all see the proof to make an informed decision, before one of us falls foul of a rejected warranty claim after a manufacturer spots "fuel / engine additive on a service receipt.

I was told they changed the formula by adding the small amount of extra lubricant purely so the weren't manufacturing an identical product which would make them liable. As for the rest of your points yes I think it would be interesting to read some of the science behind these products maybe the info is there on their websites which at the time of typing this I haven't looked. I wonder if it would be possible to get our rep or even the new owner of 4tec to come onto this thread via Peter Warman to state their case I could supply phone numbers if its agreeable to all.

This relates to the claims of diesel fuel additive manufacturers relating to added lubricity to prevent component wear from "dry" ULSD.

Quite worrying that some claim improvements & make the situation worse with their additives.

This particular research was purely down to lubricity & not cleansing ability / power increases etc.

The Auto Express article refers to a study "Which" carried out on the further claims of fuel additive manufacturers which again stated that some additives make the fuel perform worse than in its untreated form.

I've had a good look through the internet & can't find any reputable report that states these products work.

The additive manufacturers claim their products work, but I can't find a link to provide proof of this.

The EPA in America regulates Fuel additives in the U.S, but they are only interested in passing them as safe regarding what comes out of the tailpipe & not whether they work.

I found an article on race fuels & competitors putting an array of additives in their tank, none of which improved performance & some which actively damaged the engines.

I've made my decision, unless someone can prove via an independent report that this stuff is actually useful,it may be best avoided.

I have used forte products for years and have had some amazing results, I have just finished an hour long chat with my rep who I trust implicitly discussing this thread, yes it was disgruntled ex forte middle managers who have set up this company , to directly oppose Forte and poach customers with a pound,yes a pound, reduction in cost.

Many here rubbish additives, I would never oil flush every car that comes in,especially if VAG !, but additives have a place, not flushes but fuel additives, they do work !

I am now getting Wurth, wynns and even innotec now trying to sell me additives,Forte is my brand and that is the only additive I will buy because it does work !

Hi Tony,
I wasn't taking a pop at Forte, I think all additives are snake oil.
They aren't approved by vehicle manufacturers. Why?

Which? magazine tested a selection & concluded they didn't work.
The link to the diesel additive testing states a lot of them actually made the fuel damaging to high pressure diesel fuel systems.
My interest centres around - where is the actual proof they work?

All I would like to see is a properly conducted independent test on these products - I have scoured the web & can't find any that say these products do any good.
I have found plenty that state they do harm systems or nothing at all.

We have been using you products for several years now but we are finding a few manufacturers are suggesting not to use flushes in their vehicles. Would it do any harm to continue flushing vehicles? I can only speak from experience and I cant recommend forte products highly enough, I have seen the benefits of improved economy and emissions but a 100% mark up on the cost of a bottle is definately the clincher.

Hi Chris,

do you have any examples of where you know 100% for sure this product has improved a running issue on an engine?
We've tried it for sticking turbos, EGR's, high emissions, DPF issues etc & never once has it cured an issue.
i.e, I know 100% for sure that these products didn't work in these cases.
So does the customer who shelled out his hard earned on a bottle of uselessness that failed to produce a result.
Our reputation comes into question at this point from the customers viewpoint, particularly if he reads Which magazine or Auto Express.

When I read in the Forte "bulletins" that their "advanced formula gas treatment" cures misfires on 3 cylinder 1.2 Polos, I become highly suspicious.

Which is why I am interested in seeing something factual on paper that this multi million pound business is not just smoke & mirrors & a large placebo effect propped up by "trustworthy" salesteams, (is there such a thing as a trustworthy salesman??).

I'm not taking a pop at anyone, I just want to see some evidence - we have stocked & used Forte, Wurth & Wynn's & never once have any of these add to the tank products provided a long lasting or worthwhile reult.
After 5 years of adding this stuff to fuel tanks & parting customers from their cash to no good effect, I think it may be time for someone to publish a test report on this stuff proving it's usefulness.
Bearing in mind this product is added to a tank of fuel & it runs through systems in a highly diluted form in varying quantities of dilution dependant on fuel level in the tank.

Who here does believe a half pint bottle of DPF cleaner diluted into 60L or 20L of fuel in the tank (does the fuel tank need to be empty, half full, full?)put through a combustion process then landing in the DPF at 600 to 800C is going to get it's toothbrush out & start cleaning the pores of a DPF while hurtling into a blind alley & back out again with a selection of carbon particles attached to its back?
The Forte rep advised it increases the temp in the DPF speeding up the process, but the DPF temp during regen is controlled via temp senders, air flow, Lambda, injected quantity etc & is carefully mapped by the engine management to maintain a set temperature, so surely that can't be right?

It would be nice to see Fortes extensive testing documentation on this product to see what it actually does?
Or is it a closely guarded secret like the recipe for Vimto?

the 2 instances that really stand out are when i had a customer turn up for us to price up a dpf for a Toyota Avensis after being quoted by the main dealers £1800, i put in a bottle of the DPF cleaner and the fuel additive and had the driver go off and use the remainder of his fuel which i believe was around the half way mark, about 2 weeks later he returned with a case of beers as this had done the job and the light had not returned. i think your rep was wrong when he said it raises the temp of the DPF to help the burn, im sure i read somewhere where it lowers the temp at which the burn can take place. i would also think that its effectiveness would depend on how far the blockage went, if it were blocked to such an extent where gas flow was reduced to a certain point then so would the effectiveness of the product. i have also used it on my own vehicle which did the same journey every week driven in the same way etc and there was a 3 mpg improvement. only small i know but a definite improvement. i also have a sun carbonvac machine which is an excellent tool but rarely used since using forte.
i think much of its success or lack of would be dependant on the driving of the vehicle, the guy with the Avensis took a long dive to Manchester on the day i put the jollop in his tank this may explain the differing opinions on this product.

As i have said earlier , i use it in every service and do not see the problems with customer cars. I have used the oil seal conditioner to cure leaking valve stem seals, after a car has stood for a time. I had great success early on with a Toyota Surf 4x4 that would not rev past 1500 rpm after running for a minute or so. I felt it was a pump issue and added the diesel additive, after warming it up i test drove it for 10mile and it ran perfectly. That was 4yrs ago and it is still running as it should, the fault not returning.
I do believe it is of benefit to the customer, but obviously is not a cure all!
I will question the rep next time he's around though.

I was sold on it when I tried it on my other halves TT. The car had been dealer serviced on the button before we brought it at 80,000 miles. So at 100,000 miles the car was using about 1 litre of oil in 800-900 miles. I used a gas treatment and a clean and protect with an oil change. The car now is using about a litre every 1800 miles. I always now use a gas treatment and clean and protect on my vehicles after all the it's cheaper than the 507 oil at this rate.

Car now on about 140,000 miles

Hi All,
My rep has also jumped ship and gone with 4tec but I don't use much of the stuff so am yet to make up my mind. On the subject of the use of additives I will try and not fall off the fence

I have used Forte seal treatment on leaking trolley jacks as well as my 20t press and all leaks were cured. I once put some in the gearbox of a Volvo that was leaking quite badly and a trip to the moon later and it was still leak free!
I only tend to use the fuel additive for filling up new fuel filters (no contamination) and will agree with some on the placebo effect. The reps will try and sell the stuff based on the profit potential but my view is that there is always something else more important that needs doing on the car. So rather than add £30 (for additive and flush) I find myself looking for ways of reducing the bill. A pair of wiper blades makes just as much profit and has a huge safety factor!

I have been using forte regularly for several years now.Cars we service regularly using forte when presented for mot are definitely running cleaner with very low co and hc readings.Diesels are always cleaner and smoke free.But cant compare it to other products as we only use forte.

So it is unlikely you have compared additive cars against a well serviced car with-out additive.

Thats true, but at mot cars that have been regularly serviced are easy to distinguish from those that havent.I was just making the observation that the ones I know have regular servicing including flush and fuel additive seem to run a lot cleaner on the analyser.Customers cars we only see for mot's are noticable poorer on gas tests with higher hc and co.

I used engine flush on my very 1st car an Austin A40 Farina and every car since.

On joining Rolls Royce Quality Engineering Dept my allegiance to flush was shared by the Technical Head of the Oil Lab.

Engine Test Bed results proved this. Repeated cold starts and endurance tests 24/7 on other manufacturers engines was commonplace,with tight security.

Since leaving RR to form my own business I tried different flushes using a pedal pusher on the throttle set at fast idle.
Improvements in piston ring & valve sealing could cause the engine rpm to rise as compressions started to match raising efficiency. Also a compression test before and after could prove the benefit.

Forte constantly came out on top.

Never have I had an engine problem using flush.
Commonsense dictated engines, which have been seriously neglected, flush was not to be used for fear of blocking the pump strainer/pipes etc.

As regards manufacturers not approving flush out,
I would suggest they have a vested interest in selling parts.
