Peugeot 206 - Rear hub stuck on stub axle #

Year of Manufacture *: NA

This is the rear drum brake set up with the bearing in the drum! It should just slide off once the hub nut is removed.

But it is stuck fast!

There is no evidence that there is a problem with the bearing (The problem I am attempting to fix is (I suspect) a delaminated brake shoe). No evidence of overheating, no roughness/movement etc

I have tied a hub puller on it and a big hammer and it will not budge!

Anybody come across this before? How did you solve it?

I am now at the stage where I know I am going to have to destroy stuff to get it apart, it is just a matter of how much I will have to destroy!

My impression is that the inner race of the bearing might be undersize and that it was "wound on" using the hub nut.

Unless anybody has a better suggestion my next move is to try tensioning the hub with the puller while using a small Oxy jet to heat the offending bearing race

Just out of interest, was it one of the Hydraulic type ?

If not maybe worth a try.

No It wasn't a hydraulic type.

(I don't actually have one and do not intend to buy one just for one job)

But there was a LOT of tension on it (To the extent that it was beginning to crush the end of the stub axle), and this is a set up where there shouldn't really be any tension at all!

So something is badly wrong!

Normally if there that tight it will either pull the shoes off or break the bearing up. Had a few which were difficult to remove but a screw type hub puller is all I use.

Probably end up cutting through the drum to have a closer look.

hi paul, I use a brass drift to beat the stub axle through the arm. it has fine splines on it and is easily refitted. hth rob

It is not the shoes that are holding it on. The drum will rotate (It is just that the shoes lock it up after half a turn or so)

I cannot think of anything other than the inner race of the outer bearing (IYSWIM) that is holding it on

From the back I take. I did wonder how the axle stub was fitted, Is that really all that holds the wheels on!

Why hasn't the force of the hub puller pushed the stub axle/pin out of the back if its purely a press in fitt.

Unless of course your using a slide hammer type hub puller.

sounds like you've got a big wear lip on the drum, put the hub puller back on & go for it, i have the hydraulic type & other than killing the shoe pull down spring clips, separating the inner & outer bearings or pulling the linings off i've always done it, never cut a drum off or damaged a stub axle yet!
you'll still need to take it apart anyway, so crack on!

Well, finally got round to getting the angle grinder out.

After about 40 mins grinding and bashing all removed with no damage to axle.

The problem??

Rust build-up between the inner bearing race and the stub Axle!

A quick polish with wet-or-dry and a smear of grease and hopefully all should go back together ok!
