Fiat Stilo 2005 - How to repair CAN wire? #

Year of Manufacture *: 2005
( Optional ) Engine Code or CC: info req repair can wire

Hi

abs traction control oil light no speedo rev counter temp gauge
modules reporting communication with each other
tested CAN at dash, power steering and at abs
found no signal on one can wire traced to broken just before abs module due to corrosion
but need to know how or the method of repairing the break i know cant solder and i don't think i can just but connect it
HELP please

In situations like this,I would use heat shrink butt connectors.If the cable is rotten and you need to replace a section,try and keep it a similar length and twisted if it is already.I use the Wurth connectors.These are top quality.All the others I have tried are rubbish.But that's another story!

hi andy i thought there was something aboutt using a paricular length of wire and was going to use but connectors and heatshrink
it is tristed so if i untwist the length to be replaced re-twist the same amount of turns??

As it is only over a short length,the twisting is not that important.Just try to keep it as near to orignal as possible.Twited pairs are nothing new,my father was using these in the RAF during WW2.

Hello Martin,
Also when using heat srink butt conectors don't bend the wire back on its self ( to double it up so to speak ) just push wire straight it and crimp, and as Andy said the twisting is not that crucial for this kind of repair.

Heres the VW blurb on CAN repairs:

"Repairs to CAN bus wiring can be carried out either with sections of repair wiring with the correct cross section or with entwined wires “green/yellow” or “white/yellow” from the electronic parts catalogue (ETKA)

When repairs are performed, both bus wires must have the same length.

When twisting the wires together, the length of each complete twist must be 20 mm.
There must not be any section of wiring, for example in the vicinity of crimp connectors, longer than 50 mm with the wires not twisted."

I sent you an email of the example repair to go with the script above.

hi thanks for all the replies after over 3hrs spent on this job on Thursday i had had enough as well as the customer needed it back so due to return to it mid week next week.
i did just crock clip a link to prove no more faults and all did work.
can always check the repair after to confirm good cann signal i suppose
but it is nice to get to the bottom of jobs like this.
i now find out it already has had a body module and previous eerrrm repairer in the loosest term
wanted to fit new abs module before customer applied the stop on the job.
i think he was waiting for me to condemn the body module or confirm previous diagnosse/guess of the abs module before coming clean that work already been done. had an idea someone been in there screws missing and bare wires
