Nissan Micra 1.2 CR12DE 2006 - Replacing timing chain #

Is it possible to replace timing chain without removing the engine/transmission, has anyone managed it ?

Hi Malcom

I have heard it is possible but there is some plate you have to cut near the bell housing.

I have never done it this way!

We always take the engine and transmission out.

The first one we did we set a stopwatch, it took 2 of us and we hed the engine and trasmission on the bench in a little under 30 minutes.

I can not see the point in struggling, I personally think you would loose more time doing the job in situe.

Do a search and you will find the info you need. we do them in situ. if its the first you have done allow a couple of days. after the first the job can be done in about 6 to 7 hours.

i've done them both ways, the 1st one i done was an automatic and according to the nissan data i had it says remove engine for a manual box but leave it in for an auto.

The one we took the engine out of was done for another reason other than timing chain but it does make it far easier to clean up the gasket surfaces as the Nissan sealer is some excellent stuff that takes some scrpaing.

One thing you really need to watch for is the head gasket once you remove the timing case cover as its easily damaged.

Also pay attention to how you lock/unlock the vvt pulley as this is what sets the timing.
