I have heard it is possible but there is some plate you have to cut near the bell housing.

I have never done it this way!

We always take the engine and transmission out.

The first one we did we set a stopwatch, it took 2 of us and we hed the engine and trasmission on the bench in a little under 30 minutes.

I can not see the point in struggling, I personally think you would loose more time doing the job in situe.
