Ford Transit 2.2 TDCi 2008 - Piston replacement #

I've replaced one piston on this van last week as it was cracked in half. I've just had a 2007 fiat ducato with the same engine (not sure of power) come in with the same fault. Has anyone else seen this problem on this engine? Is there a known cause? I think I will get the transit back in & check fuel trims etc but there was no sign of melting-just a clean crack.

Hi Guys

Maybe one for the Theory Board but can faulty fueling on a diesel such as a dodgy injector cause enough heat to melt a piston?

My understanding is that with a diesel if there is a fueling issue it would make smoke, unlike petrol injection where a faulty injector / fueling could cause enough heat to melt a piston

Hi Alan

I have not experienced this myself but I have also heard a couple of horror stories on these new transits, piston failure due to faulty injectors.

I am just thinking out loud here,

Maybe I'll fuelling could cause bore wash and Excessive heat?

If a cold piston heated up too quickly would it crack?

Thanks for the replies guys, I will try to put some pictures up. The transit had some scoring on the thrust sides but I'm pretty sure this happened after the crack as the gudgeon pin pushed the two halves apart. I did do a service on it afterwards & used injector cleaner. It's just been to Poland & back with no problems. I haven't got the ducato one out yet (should be by monday)but can see the crack with a bore scope down the injector hole. I've checked with both customers & they say they've been using normal diesel.

Just to add, local ford dealer told me they don't sell pistons separately-only a short engine! Got an aftermarket one (the same make as the one I took out)

if the injector sticks open i think the jet can bore through the crown & i guess a crack could soon develop from there.
had a couple of engines in 58 & 08 relays do this at about 80k miles, one took the big ends with it

I think you might be onto something there Steve, I've removed the ducato one today & it has a hole through the crown & out the side just under the bottom ring. A crack has started to develop but only on one side this time. There is a small hole on the transit one too. I bet if I put a rod through the holes it will point straight to the injector tip on tdc. Just to second everyone else, 2010 transit, dodgey injector bore washed cylinder and scored all the bore, new injector, piston, rings & shells etc, honed cylinder and been fine ever since, engineering company we use said they've done stacks of em!!! Our customer replaced all injectors to prevent it happening again in the near future! Symptoms were a DTC for injector circuit, knocking noise and low compression on offending cylinder!
