MOT Question - MIL on failures #

If it is now an MOT fail to have any MIL on at the time of testing. Is it now also an offence to use a car with any MIL on??

As of the moment it is not an MOT failure to have an engine MIL on for MOT it has never been brought in by VOSA some of the press said it is a failure but they got it wrong. SRS lights at the moment are still only an advisory as the Government didn't pass it through parliament according to our rep and it is def not listed in rfr's. So as i see it, it's not a problem.

It's all a load of old cobblers they need to sort the whole thing out from scratch, take suspension bushes for instance, fail in service but pass MOT but that's a whole different can of worms, and as for allowing discounting of the test fee

grrrrr.....

Well, that is kind of reassuring (I dont actually have much to do with MOT's myself so I am only really relying on the grapevine)

My original understanding was that the idea was a sort of "Fail-safe" in that there are so many warning lights on vehicles these days that it would be impossible for an MOT tester, within the confines of the test, to conclude that any particular light indicated un-roadworthiness so the "Fail safe" position would be to fail on any illuminated MIL!

Mind, I suspect that it is only a matter of time before something like this does come in, (If only to further reduce the availability of cheap old cars for poor people!

)

I either read, or heard somewhere that in the US, at least some states, they check live data relating to emissions. If all self tests within the system are not complete the vehicle will not pass and will have to be retested when all self tests are complete.
So resetting the mil just to pass the test wont work as may have happened in the past. Might be an indication of whats coming in the future.
I know here, (Ireland) abs light on, or not working is a fail, I assume it is the same for the UK.

The plan was to fail warning lamps for safety related systems (airbag, esp etc). As has been said, the media will never let the truth get in the way of a good story, and included engine MILs too. However the likes of Peugeot with their 2 stage warning lights (passenger airbag deactivation puts the warning lamp on) caused confusion! Until they've logged all the different variations, the warning lamp fiasco, will remain an advisory only.

It makes me laugh, that engine mils were introduced in the early 00's for emissions reasons, and then nothing has been done to use them for the correct reasons.
