Fiat Stilo 2.4 20v 2002 - Advice on changing Sele Speed box - Fixed #

Hi guys

I wondered if anybody could offer any advice on changing the origonal gearbox for a second hand one that the customer has supplied.

The problem with the old one is the diff has collapsed and broke through internally in the bell housing.

I under stand the clutch and gear changes are actuated via solenoids and wondered if I would need to recalibrate any of the gear changes or calibrate the clutch actuator.

Do I have to put the clutch actuator in a removal mode where it is then possible to take the box off without damaging anything.

I dont want to get my leg too far in if is going to be a pain, I have already warned the customer about using second hand parts and he is more than happy for the work to be carried out and has supplied his own gearbox.

Any advice is much appriciated

Yes the box and clutch will need re-learning.

Thanks for reply.

I know what you are saying about second hand parts causing problems, the owner loves this car

so is willing to take a chance. He is a regular customer so I wish him the best of luck.

The dealer quoted £70+vat to do the relearn procedure so I have prepered him for this.

My Modis has got the special function options for clutch bleed and end of line and all relearn procedures, there is quite a few procedures listed, although I dont feel confident it will be successful. It often fails me on similar tasks.
I do have access to other generic equipment, can I ask what tool you use to carry out the procedures?

I have downloaded the manual for this vehicle and although there is some interesting info on the sele speed system and how it functions the calibration procedure dosent seem to be included.

Can you give me any pointers on the correct procedure to setting the box up?
or
Does it simply have to be done with dealer tool?

do u know anyone with dec2 or 3 they will do re-learn for the clutch actuator

Hi I done few of them selespeed boxes on alfa147 2.0 ts(twice on my own). DOne relearning with texa , but I'm sure other scanners should have this option a s well- FES definitely.

DEC, Texa, and Fiat Examiner will all carry out the re-learn procedure.

Thanks for all replies and advice,
The job went quite smooth in the end, I changed the flywheel(dual mass), clutch and gearbox including pump unit and solenoid block.

I carried out the clutch bleed and the end of line procedure with the Modis and the car drove better than it ever has before according to the customer

The clutch biting point and smoothness is perfect even on hill starts. There is a very complicated clutch biting point re-learn procedure described on the modis but this was thankfully not needed. I'm not sure if I was just lucky or if the re-learn was done during the 130 second end of line procedure.

I didn't try and drive the car before carrying out the re-learn so I am assuming that the modis carried it out sucessfully.
