Renault Megane 1998 - Type 1 immo #

Hi all,

This Megane came as a non runer due to an immo issue.

I have found out that sometimes the configuration on these quality French vehicles can change itself from being type 1 to being type 2. This was news to me, but I re-coded it as type 1 and it starts perfectly.

Anyone know any more about this? I assume it's a software error in the body module? Does it normally happen again? There is no option to update the software in the module so if it needs further attention I assume it will need a new module?

Hello Alan, I've had the same thing happen on a '98 megane scenic twice in just over a year. I had to take it to renault both times. They've recommended that the customer had a unit changed but I can't remember what they called it. I'll dig out the invoice tomorrow to check.

Hi Alan,

It will be the body module, nothing else it can be really.

It would seem that this car did something similar 18 months ago, but the customer is not sure of the details. I have never heard of this problem before but if it's not a common problem I would be tempted to fit a used module. If it is common a used module is not worth the risk. I don't want to fit a new module needlessely either.
I think system voltage is the big issue in a lot of cases like this, but it appears not in this case.

Unless anyone has experience of this then I guess time will tell.

Hi Alan,

This is indeed a common problem and I would say 50% of the time it will come back some months later with the same issue. as far as I am aware a new UCH will cure this, although I have never been asked to fit one to cure this.

An RPM module from Avon will work around the problem as it will send the immo signal direct to the engine ECU bypassing the UCH.

Hi Alan,

For what its worth, I can second what Mike has said. I have seen a few of these and sometimes the fault comes back a few months later, others do not.

As Mike said, it was the UCH that renault dealer recommended to be replaced. I'm sure mine will be back soon with the same problem as the customer hasn't had anything done about it yet. I'll look into the part Mike mentioned (thanks for that info Mike).Michael
