Year of Manufacture *: 98(ish) LHD (US spec according to VW)
VIN WV2ZZZ70ZVH144331
Problems started with transmission being stuck in first with fault codes for torque converter lock up problem (Sorry, foolishly failed to record fault code ), on basis of web search changed oil and filters (Oil was clean with no sludge, perticles or swarf in the gearbox sump)
Codes cleared but have not test driven yet (The coil pack is duff with no spark on two cylinders am wondering if this also has a bearing on the case..., awaiting replacement. I am not sure if this is a recent issue or simply that the owner never realised, he has only recently bought the van and the engine runs quite smooth at speed even missing two cylinders, and the remaining 4 would still give him nearly 100HP to play with! so its not impossible, I have seen this sort of thing before)
I cannot move the selector into 3-2-1. There appears to be some sort of interlock. There is no owners manual so I am not sure how it is supposed to work.
There are currently no auto box fault codes logged (Though I am part way through more general repairs as stated so have not test driven yet)
I have a feeling that there might be a BPP issue (although there is no fault code), would anybody know what blocks accessable by VAG-COM might tell me if the ECU can see the brake switch operating?
You can't select 3,2,or 1 unless you RELEASE the brake pedal, so basically under normal conditions this would mean you'd be moving, the interlock works as normal when selecting D,R or P, ie foot on brake to move the lever. So, to select 3, foot on brake and select D, foot off brake and move shifter to 3 etc.....
The TCC bridging malfuntion is a common fault caused by glazing or excess wear on the torque converter clutch friction material, the OBD needs 3 instances before setting a hard code, so you won't necessarily see a code for a few miles and then only after a restart. The fix is a new TC and possibly a valve body mod to boost the apply pressure if reduced symptoms persist after installation.
