Vauxhall Corsa 1.2 2005 - Non start #

Year of Manufacture *: 2005
( Optional ) Engine Code or CC: 1200cc

Car was towed in with non start.
Turns over fine, but sounds like it has a plug or two gone down.

I have checked all the usual stuff this afternoon, but cant seem to come up with the answer, although i'm sure I have done an Astra with a similar fault.

Any ideas lads?

what engine code is it have you red the fault codes??
any air leaks?
fuel pressure?
plugs fouled?
exaust blocked?
headgasket?
inlet manifold cracked?
you say you have done the usual did that include a code reed at the least

Hi Liam

Could you give us some idea of the tests you have done and the results?. The only information you have supplied is that it "Turns Over"

*Checked all the usual stuff" is not really a very professional term

Time of day, etc.....

Ok, so did code read, and has no codes.
Plugs fine, not wet though.
Tested fuel pump relay and the switched earth from ecu.
Checked battery voltage, ok.
I am inclined to think that there may be a crank sensor fault, but I stopped on that course after code read came back clear.

I have NOT done the following;
Compression test.
Checked timing.

I have also ran the fuel pump through 'functional tests',as i thought maybe no fuel and this completed fine.

Sorry, cannot remember the engine code, but will take a look tomorrow and report back.

hi if the pugs are not wet its worth checking to see if pump relay is switching in live data and test if pump is delivering PETROL and at pressure
also check to see if you have induction from the inlet manifold as you could have a blockage
also worth looking at engine temp sensor in live data and test mass air flow
also check for supply to injectors and ecu signal/trigger to injectors there is also within the ecu live data immobilizer on or off and engine rpm
there is a separate earth from the ecu to the engine on some and i dont suppose the cam chain may have jumped was it rattling.

Do a compression test. Is this the engine that snaps camshafts.

My advice would be to look and see if you have an rpm reading while cranking in the live data, this will confirm crank sensor.
Then scope the ignition primarys and confirm if the coil is being switched.
then scope the injectors to see if they're getting switched.
you could even put the gas sample pipe and check if you have hc's while cranking.

I don't see the point at this stage dismantling to check compressions, you need to verify the fuel and ignition systems first.

These are just a few simple tests I would do first, assuming you have the equipment. This will surely point you in the right direction.

Evening All,

Perhaps I am missing something here but when I am presented with a non-starter, the first port of call would be to physically check for a spark and then fuel and then go on from there. I see little point of scoping, compression tests, et al until these basics have been checked. Maybe I am being a bit too simplictic.

Little point in scoping??, it's much easier and quicker to back probe a couple of connectors than pulling coils, plugs and fuel pipes.

In my opinion there is no set order to do a diagnosis in. It’s a judgment call based on experience and what you observe on a particular job.

In this case Liam said “Turns over fine, but sounds like it has a plug or two gone down” and also describes it as a non runner, so assuming he means an uneven crank speed then the first thing to suspect must surely be compression?

Of course, that may not be what he meant. Its just my reading of it based on the amount of info posted.

Hi Chris,

I think its each to our own on this. To check a spark takes me less than a minute with a jumper lead and checking HC,s at the tail pipe is about the same. To set up my Pico-scope takes a lot longer. In essence, for me, it is very much quicker to check the basics before proceeding down a specific diagnostic route.

on the thoughts of to scope or not to scope if as i use a verus the whole machine is running and it takes not a second to change from scanner to scope.
so it makes sense to me IF I FEEL IT WARRANTS IT to check compressions takes not a minuet with current clamp then if assessable cam sensor and coil trigger and then injector signal however other people find other methods easer
that and i need to replace my high input current clamp as it wont zero :-(

Hi Liam
Just a thought check for fuel pressure even if pump runs on a system check it may not be pumping fuel? It can be tested on the fuel rail via the schrader valve

I was trying to keep my post short. I agree with all the tests suggested. What ever equipment you have to test for a spark [apprentice in the good old days] joke. Fuel pressure and injector pulse including hc. If it has them the crank sensor is working. Mechanical ,compressions and valve timing[which ever is easiest scope. gauges for pressure or vacuum or visual] When it comes to compression hearing is a vital sense. What i was trying to say is that certain twin cam vauxhalls are snapping camshafts the caps are working loose. It might not be the same engine but if the compressions were ok [scope or gauge] its not that and you can move on to the next test. My theory on the plugs being dry is that the valves aren't opening. I hope you have the car up and running
