Peugeot 307 1.6 HDi 2004 - Turbo problems #

Hi All

A mate has just had the turbo go on his 307, when he started to look in to getting a new turbo he got a lot of horror stories, the gist of it being he would need a full engine rebuild. The unit did not explode or run on the engine oil it just appeared to seize. Is there any thing special to do on this or is just check/replace oil feeds clean out pipework etc.

The problem is very common, extremely so infact.
According to my parts supplier the replacement turbo is supplied with a new oil supply pipe - the cause of the problem.
There is an issue with where the pipe is routed, and it is very close to the heat from the exhaust.
This heat causes the oil to 'cook' and consequently carbon deposits within the pipe, restricting oil flow - very bad for a turbo!
So, very unfortunate that it has happened, but a new turbo will be required, and make sure you fit a new oil supply pipe.
I have taken to cleaning them out on my regular customers cars, to avoid this costly problem.

Hello Keith i have also seen (but more so on the 407 1.6hdi)that the engine suffer alot with the "black death " same as the old overhead valve fiesta use to get in the rocker covers.

A have seen the sumps and oil strainer pipe quite blocked with the black death causing oil feed problems so maybe worth a look .

"Black Death" I havn't heard that term for years.

Does this mean the wrong oil fitted or poor quality oil?

Yes the "black death " term came from the old overhead fiesta days and the cvh escort, they were always caked up to death.

I think there is a few reasons for the diesels suffering with the black death, poor quality oils, oils with incorrect additive packages, the intervals are getting longer and longer.
Some of the small journey round town diesel cars just dont get up to temp and suffer alot with condensation in the block
More percentage of egr control or faulty egr systems, we have all seen how caked up the inlet manifold can get and alot of the cak ends up carried in the oil.

ford have same issue with focus1600 hdi they suppy turbo with 5 page tsb also fit new bangos with filter in & new oil strainer & a GET OUTclause at the end explaining if the prob reoccurs needs new engine! nice touch!

thanks for the replies, what he i going to try and do is bypass the turbo oil feeds (join flow and return) flush it and run it on clean oil before it is stripped to try and get it clean before the new turbo and pipes go on. i dont know if this is possible as i havent seen it and am trying to keep it at arms length. i will let you know how it goes

If the rocker cover has 'black death' attached to it then recommend an engine because flush agents will not remove the caked on carbon and sludge.

We try to assist customers at all times but you will get burnt with these procedures in 'trying'
to get around the problem.

It will seize again we have seen many unfortunately.

Hi Keith This is very troublesome turbo you need to allow 8 hours for this new oil pump strainer in sump(cant be washed out)new feed pipe kit my turbo man tells me not to put back banjo bolt filter gauze as this will block again,when turbo you have to measure oil flow returning to sump,make sure nut is not missing from intake impeller of old turbo and turbo specialists will not give you warranty on new unit, you have to advise your customer of this.
