Renault Clio 1999 - Timing mark location? #

Might be a silly question but can anyone tell me where the cam sprocket timing mark should line up?
Autoadata clearly shows the sprocket mark inline with the "E13" mark should line up with the centre of the rocker cover which has a casted "m" shape at the end of it but this one does not? there is a hole in the sprocket cover which has a cut through it at a diagonal which i assume has some relevance? The belt has broken on this so need to know where to line it up otherwise ill be putting another 8 new valves in it! Sorry for the crude post just though someone out there must have seen this variant of rocker cover and i cant find it anywhere on autodata? Thanks for reading. Luke

Have you tried setting the cam roughly right (EG Both No1 cam lobes pointing up) and seeing if anything lines up??

Might be a good start if all else fails.

It can be difficult to decide where these marks are sometimes. I have normally found that the crankshaft marks are visible and I usually use the white marks on the belt to align the cam timing (most makes of belt have them). Still turn the engine over about 30 times before I'm happy though

defiantly OCD about cam timing.

Thanks for the replies. Timed it up roughly using the method in the first post but then had to adjust it by two teeth and now it's spot on! If I never have to adjust tappets again it'll be to soon!! Unfortunatley this belt didn't have the White marks on it! Must remember to order one with them next time! Thanks again. Luke
