It can be difficult to decide where these marks are sometimes. I have normally found that the crankshaft marks are visible and I usually use the white marks on the belt to align the cam timing (most makes of belt have them). Still turn the engine over about 30 times before I'm happy though 
defiantly OCD about cam timing.
