Peugeot 307 1.6 NFU 2001 - ABS fault, code 2129 ring gear wrong number of teeth #

Hi All

This vehicle was left with me, it has been looked at by a mobile tech but he had no diagnostic equipment to check ABS

Customer says it started a couple of weeks ago, the ABS kicks in and seems to be from the NS front wheel, the ABS MIL does not come on

Fault codes:
37 Incorrect number of teeth (Modis)
2129 Ring gear wrong number of teeth (KTS)

Had it on the ramp this morning at it looks like the sensors work off the wheel bearings, sensors look ok and intact, no sign of anything being replaced (new bearing etc)

The fault code is not very specific as to which wheel has the wrong amount of teeth

I did try to get the ABS MIL to come on with the KTS, but it would not bring the lamp on, also spun both wheels up by hand an got a reading around 5mph, so looks like it is sensing the wheels ok

Its the non illumination of the ABS MIL that worries me

Your thoughts on this please , I know they will want me to look further but I do not want to start replacing parts at will

I see there is a Recall on 307's for an ABS related fault (among others)Link below.

I asume all tyres are same size etc, as system would only compare pulses from all sensors to know if there was an incorrect number of teeth from one of them.

I hooked up the Multiscan and took it for a short drive, all four wheels were showing exactly the same MPH, the ABS light was on during the short drive, but the pedal did not pulse. When I disconnected the Multiscan the ABS light went out and the pulsing was back

Had a quick look under the wheel arch cover and the wiring was all caked in mud, so water ingress may be a possible theory

I will get her to give the Peugeot dealer a ring to see if this fault is part of the recall

Hello Peter,
Could it be a fault with abs ecu earth(which you are supplying an earth through diagnostic connector,pin 4 & 5) if the pulsing comes back when multiscan disconnected. I would expect the light to be on with any scan tool connected to abs system. May be worth trying another scan tool to see if pulsing still disappears.Not sure whether ABS would get an earth common to diagnostic connector though.

Normal cause of this false activation on 307's is the air gap on rear sensor increasing due to rust build up under the fixing. Worth taking back wheels of and having a look.

The pump is near n/s/f wheel so that could be reason it sound like that corner playing up.

You may be lucky to see wheel speed drop out at low speed on one wheel.

Don't recall that fault code description on 307, but as said could be tyre size, other than that scope job. Odd does not say which wheel.

She is collecting the car later and I am just charging her for the code read and an initial look

I have told her that any further investigation will be at additional cost, so put the ball back in her court, do not want to get sucked into further testing just for the price of a code read

I've had the exact same fault you describe,
The recall from peugeot was to do with a waterproof cover over the abs controller i think if its had it there should be a white sticker there somewhere.
THe reason the custmomer says it feels like n/s/f is because; as i'm sure you know,that is where the pump is.
For me the only way I discovered it was to scope all 4 sensors from the connections at the pump ( i found it easier to remove bumper to do this} then drive it on the road on the car i had it turned out to be 2 sensors. One was an easy spot when the abs cut in the signal dropped altogeter the second was a dog, on the scope capture the signal only dropped out for a fraction of a second but this turned out to be faulty and problem was cured.
I think i've got the wavform saved somewhere so will try and email or post it when i find it.

I will explain to her later that this may not be an easy fault to trace and it could be more than one sensor. At least I can tell her a few hours labour and parts could be involved

Im with Aiden on this

Everytime ive had a pulsing pedal as you come to a stop on a 307 and ive done a lot

was down to excessive airgap caused by rust build up under the sensor

Scantools usually turn the abs function off when reading codes / parameters etc hence the pedal not pulsing

Evening Peter,what you have there is a classic air gapping problem,the abs ecu is being fooled into thinking that the car has gone into a skid and invoking abs routine.
The chances are it will be one of the front sensors,take them off and clean/lightly file the mating surfaces,this should improve the voltage amplitude and make for a more plausible signal.

I would Go for the rear sensors first due to the amount that we have done compared with front sensors., ( 95% Rear faults caused by rust build up ) You can actually see the size of the gap before removal.

The Best tool for picking up the fault on this vehicle is definitely KTS, Get all 4 wheel sensors showing on Live data, Change it to a graph and watch it as someone drives you about at various speeds. ( usually shows up at very slow speeds ) It will pick up any drop outs in speed signal and show it on the graph so that you can see a clear Glitch.

Its a lot quicker and easier than scoping, No Bumper removal etc.

We Had one that had an intermittent brake judder that we pinpointed with KTS but we still couldnt see what the fault was, It turned out to be a Rear wheel bearing even though there was no obvious play in it. but it was only available as a complete hub assembly.

We Used, Snap on, Launch, JK100 and Even Peugeot Planet on that one, And the Only Tool that did what we needed it to do was KTS.

( or we could have scoped it )

She collected the vehicle yesterday and is letting the Peugeot dealer have a look Monday ref the recall

I told her that if they want to carryout further diagnostics or replace the ABS unit

to get back to me as I now have more information about the fault

Hi All

Gave the customer a call today as she was taking into Peugeot dealer Monday......they still have the car, they told her that all the sensors and connections appear OK, they are now looking at changing a rear wheel bearing but not specific about which one. At least Tony has experienced this so feasible

Hi Peter,
I have a peug 307 1.6 with exactly the same ABS
fault as you had. Did the customer get it fixed at the peug dealer & if so do you remember what
the fix was.

From memory I gave her a call the following week and she told me it was still at the dealers (been there a few days), they had fitted a wheel bearing but still the same

She never did get back to me.......sorry
