    Hi Steve, yes indeed, 65535 was the indicated fault but according to VAG-com the controller number is 8DO 959 655J.
    I can see now that there is a little spring contact which shorts across the relevant pins on the clockspring unit. I'll check it again in the morning as suggested with a cable tie or something to push the contact away,
    Engine code is AJL. 1.8 litre turbo 20v
    Fax No 01403 266555. (PMA motor factors) Mark it for my attention.
