replaced relay as suggested, this then gave 12v to motor. tested wiring at motor12v+ earth ok and a variable voltage from switch, removed motor and inbuilt solid state speed controller is inside. new motor fitted
one thing to watch is that i think the motors start to sieze increasing load on relay/speed pack -this one was slightly tighter than i would have liked
