Vauxhall Astra 1.6SZR 1997 Intermittent non-start - spins over as if cambelt broken Archived Message

Intermittent non-start. When engine doesn't start, spins over quickly as if cambelt broken (similar to Volvo 850 valve sticking fault).

Plugs become very wet - correct type fitted.
ECU stored code P1640 - unable to clear. Customer supplied exchange ECU, but unable to fit as not coded.

Customer flushed engine and changed oil. We repeated with Forte flush, refilled with synthetic oil and Forte top-end treatment. Engine runs and starts perfectly 90% of the time.

Tried again this morning - spins over as if no compression, starts eventually on three cylinders, eventually clears. Customer has also replaced CTS (he's a trader, which doesn't help matters...)

    Any ideas?

    Regards,

    Joe
