BMW 318i E36 M43 SOHC (chain) engine 1995 - Lumps of metal entering cylinders Archived Message

We have a problem with this engine in as much as there are unidentified lumps of metal entering the cylinders and damaging the pistons, valves, plugs, etc.
We have searched high and low for where the metal is coming from (intake system, etc), but cannot find anything that could be breaking off and entering the cylinders. This is now the second time (1st time was No 1 and now No4 cylinder).
Just spoken to a BMW specialist and they have also encountered this on the same type of engine and also found nothing that had fallen off or broken up. Any ideas would be gratefully appreciated.
    Regards
    Trevor
