Hello John, The plot thickens !!! So you are working on a C Class not an E Class. The W203 chassis is the most common EIS we change for having a faulty EIS control units. What needs to be done is to check the powers, grounds and diagnostic data line to the OBD plug. After this is done, you can condemn the unit. This should take no longer than an hour for a Mercedes trained person) I very much doubt a new key will fix it if you cannot communicate with the unit. You need to check that the door switch works though. A quick check of the interior lamp will do that.This will rule out that it is not just a wake-up B CAN issue causing your lack of serial communication . As I said in my previous post... this is not really a job for someone with no experience with these systems. I can send you the wiring diagram.
