Hi Sean, As a general rule the EGR valve is the control valve for connecting the inlet and exhaust manifolds together during certain operating conditions. Whereas the butterfly valve is generally a "throttling" butterfly that sits in the intake system, its job is to partially restrict the incoming air and therefore encourage the EGR to be drawn in to the cylinder. It can also be used to help control the AFR (Lambda) on newer diesel systems. HTH Regards Mark
