This has been fixed for about 10 days now. I think the cluster symptom must simply have been related to the UCH and/or cluster rebooting after the battery being disconnected. It has been fine since.
When coding the key the code was rejected numerous times but the next day it was accepted. Nothing different was done to make it accept the code so I suspect this could have been due to the booting process too.
An interesting aside was that when coding the key the old key failed a few times stopping the process but the new key was accepted every time, thus proving the key at fault rather than the reader coil etc. its nice to see a positive diagnosis in a case like that.
