My company own a 3.0d and I owned a 330d a few months ago and the filter is the one near the injectors on the top if i remember when i changed them?? Its like a small cylinder wrapped in material if its the original and the superceded version is more plastic?? They should be changed or cleaned on every annual service. This is from memory so please excuse, I have never come across a turbo failing due to it but in the freelanders (BMW 2.0d engine) Ive seen dipsticks fired out due to excess pressure in the sump and my personal BMW suffered with the plastic inlet manifold splitting possibly due to this. It could cause turbo failure if it somehow restricted oil flow due to excess crank case pressure I suppose?? Anyway there only a few quid from BMW so worth putting one in if you've changed the turbo and it looks original
