Haven't they just got a transponder chip in that could have fallen out when he was fitting the batteries, ?? like other chipped keys. ??

I bought a New key for My Z3 and it worked straight out of the packet, All that was required was Remote Synchronisation which was done by cycling the ignition and pressing the remote button.
