    The EGR system reduces the internal cylinder temperature(to reduce Nox),it does this by partly filling the cylinder with an inert gas(exhaust gas)and thus reducing the available Oxygen in the cylinder for the burn process.

    If you now think about when we need a good full charge of fresh Oxygen and when it's not quite so important you will start to understand when EGR is used and when its not.(diesel is slightly different to petrol)

    Think one step further on and you will start to understand the type of fault that a stuck valve may cause.
